Smokey has parvo

I really hope Smokey gets better

My cousin's dog had it once, but sadly they didn't catch it in time. (the dog was very, very young and just wasn't strong enough) I'm sure that you are doing the best you can to help Smokey through this,

So hopefully he'll make it

Don't feel bad, I had a dog that also had his shots, but still got Parvo. He survived it, but it took two treatments to get him through it.

I personally would not take any chances exposing him to it again, if you know it's a possibility, as his system is compromised right now.

One of the things that helped bring my boy around was cooked turkey meat (I took him home thanksgiving day)... I wouldn't hesitate to get your pup to eat again by feeding him some cooked chicken or turkey.

Yep..try cooked turkey or chicken..or even chicken/turkey baby food.

I really hope your puppy feels better soon. If he was vaccinated recently the vaccine can make the parvo test be a weak positive. There is a chance it could be coronavirus - both have very similar symptoms. Be sure to give small amounts of a bland food and small amounts of water. Diligently give him his meds even if you think he is better. You can clean with a 10% bleach solution, but your vet should send you home with a parvocidal. FYI parvo will hang out in the environment for a very long time - it can actually live for more than a year. Bleach the areas where he goes outside. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm sorry your baby has parvo. The upside is he will recover with lots of TLC. I treat parvo as follows put the baby in a warm dry place offer cold water with pedialyte in it and give peptobismol 5 cc per body weight. Even with shots parvo is sometimes a problem. I have found that using bleach to clean the dog area does help. But remember parvo can be cared in by birds cats dogs and humans. Also if you can you go to petsmart and get the nutrapaste it is high I electrolytes and calories.

I didn't look back at who posted it but telling someone to "tell a little white lie" to a shelter is cruel. By bringing a parvo dog into a shelter you will just get all the other dogs sick. Many dogs aren't at the shelters long enough to receive their second vaccine let alone have it take effect. Most shelters are not financially able to treat parvo dogs so they end up being euthanized. Exposing the shelter to parvo can wipe out the entire dog population there. That is just irresponsible and mean. I'm sorry to sound so crabby, but the clinic I work at is the vet for our local shelter and I have seen this happen too many times.

So sorry to hear of the troubles! Hope the little guy makes it!

Several years ago, I had two puppies that had gotten their shots about a week prior to breaking with Parvo. The vet said the shots may have been bad and actually gave the pups Parvo. Here, they send the puppies home with you, since we don't have 24-hour animal hospitals. Around-the-clock, I had to give them injections several times a day, and since they weren't able to hold down fluids, had to actually inject large volumes of fluids just under the skin of the neck, etc. It was touch-and-go, but they did make it through. Keeping fluids to them is absolutely vital.

The Parvo virus is pretty well everywhere. As noted above, it can be tracked in on shoes, etc. Just a trip to/from the vet can bring it into your home (or pretty well anywhere else, for that matter). A similar, but not usually having quite as high a mortality rate, is the Corona virus. Vaccines are also available for that.

The reason for giving a series of shots is you are trying to cover when the maternal antibodies no longer protect the puppy. Sometimes, they drop off at 6 weeks. Maybe 8 weeks. No way to tell, so you give the shots, hoping to 'overlap' the period of while the maternal (Mom's) antibodies are still protecting it and start to drop off, when the shot will take over and protect from then on, not leaving an 'unprotected' time span between the mom's antibodies and when the shot protection kicks in. (I hope that makes sense...)

Good luck and keep us posted!
