I'm raising D' Uccles. i had bator issues so not sure if more than two cream seeming chicks will hatch that have, out of half dozen set, but can start saving eggs from my porcelain hen and millie D'feur cock, as testing 100% fertility in this weather even oddly same as my Americana bantams. hello and welcome!
Good to hear! I had no idea about showing roosters older than six months! I'm all about eggs, but since I already have layers, it's not a big deal to me to wait until September for eggs. I just don't have room for the 25+ that the hatcheries want to ship in spring/summer on top of the 22 chickens and 6 ducks that are already here.May be a weird method to my madness, but there is a method. ;-)
So... why do people hatch (etc) in spring and summer? What are the advantages?
What are the down sides to hatching in the winter?
The list is probably long for both, but... if it works for you it isn't wrong.
The important thing is that we all need to be reasonable about how much time we have, where our passions lie, how much we want to invest physically, financially, and emotionally. I farm for a living... so the bottom is important. But for someone who just has 3 chickens in their backyard I'm sure this is all quite silly.
Fun to hear different perspectives though.![]()
