sn0wwhite's Wichita Coop for the Twin Cities

Ok, so not a bad day but not as productive as yesterday. The painting department couldn't keep up with yesterday's progress and we just ran out of painted 2x4s and felt that any of our next steps need them. So back wall mostly done but needs a header and we need to do the middle rafters and I want to put a header above the doors. So, it's beer:30.

By the way, do the OSB roof boards get painted? And can I put them the long way front to back?

Beer:30, huh? :)

I think you should paint the OSB boards to keep the rain from making them fall apart.

Here's what I found: "To paint OSB board you will have to prime it first. You cannot skip this step or you will not get a uniform painted surface. Once your primer has dried you can paint with your choice of paint color."

"And can I put them the long way front to back?"
I suppose so. You would just have to cover any seams to prevent water from running through.

I will have a metal roof over the top of the OSB, does that make a difference either with the painting or direction? My paint has a primer built in, but the OSB seemed to suck it right up! And if I do paint, do I paint both sides and does it matter which side is up?

Oh, if you are putting a metal roof on top of the OSB you probably do not need to paint it, if no rain can hit the board. When you attach the metal roof, you probably should use calk or something on the nails or screws to prevent water from soaking the boards.

The OSB just has a rougher side and a smoother side. It is probably easier to paint the smoother side. But it doesn't matter as far as function goes.

I don't think you need to paint the side of the board that will be inside the coop. Unless you just want it to be painted inside.

What's the dimension, center to center, of the rafters? Hopefully it's 4'.
Ideally you want the seams of your OSB to be centered on the rafters and I would think the plans were designed that way.

I'm guessing you want the ceiling painted inside, so put the smooth side down so it's easier to paint.

Looking Good!

Good morning. Yes, I believe it's 4 feet between these rafters, and there are more that will go between these yet, so plenty of beams to hold the roof. Although I took this picture from the deck this morning and almost makes me wish I'd gone with a clear roof!

You still could ;-)....just sayin'.

Except that I went ahead and painted that one OSB.

Soooooo....save it for something else. Take back the metal roofing and get polycarbonate :)

Am just teasing...but it is possible to do some 'field design' and change material mid build.
