Snacks!

Quote:
I buy bags of this just FOR the chickens. They eat it out of my hands (except for the lower ranking ones on the periphery - for those I toss some shreds in their direction). Younger chicks are suspicious of the cheese shreds at first, but eventually will eat them. After a while, they understand they're treats.

When my chicks were really little, they really didn't like any snacks at all. They like more and more things as they get older. Yogurt (flavored too), spinach, peaches that fall from our trees.... But the one thing they love the most (and did early on too) is cottage cheese. Oh, they just ADORE cottage cheese! I figure the calcium is good for them, and they just started laying, so now I give it almost daily!

There is a full list of treats in the Raising Chickens 101 section and here is the link (if I copied it right). https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=2593-Treats_Chart

Before
it got too hot and 80% of my garden expired from heat stroke, I gave my birds (4 15 week old araucanas) everything - spinach, lettuce, eggplants, beets. Every now and again I toss in a tomato. That is great fun, not only for them but also for me! My babies also love cottage cheese too, and they get a little bowl every afternoon for protein and calcium (and because its cold and refreshing when its 110!). The frozen rasberries were fun too but very messy. Mine don't really like to have their faces washed.

Mine went nuts over raspberries. I can't believe I shared! It's funny, but of all the greens that I give them, they seem to like dandelion leaves best.
