I just finished my new coop yesterday. Going this afternoon to pick up 5 month old barred rocks.10 total. All hens. Will be looking for a barred roster in the coming months. No hurry though. I had to build a "fortress" coop and run due to abundant amount of coyotes, fox, racoons, opossums and snakes in our area. The mammals will have a very hard time getting to my girls but the reptiles not so much. I hear that moth balls are a good deterrent. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions?
I built it out of mostly recycled materials. I used to work at a lumber mill. We had a tornado come through and needless to say it wrecked a lot of stuff. During cleanup efforts i was able to capitalize on some excellent "coop" material. Lumber, roofing tin, plywood, ect....so other than buying nails, screws, wire and door hardware, i have been very fortunate maintaining cost. I was raised as a southern country boy and have been around chickens just about all my life. So this isn't my first rodeo as far as coop building goes. Its something i enjoy. The eggs aren't bad either! I do like the birds.
