Snake Eating Eggs

well I caught it. It was curled up in a nest a few days ago & had JUST swallowed an egg about 6” in. When I started trying to catch him he threw it up.

He’s now been released into a nearby forest. Should’ve kept just eating rats n mice! Texas Rat Snake.

You should have skinned it and had a nice dinner! Later in life (70's) my mom would catch a snake and skin it just to prove she still could! That's country for ya!

Chased a 4-5' black snake around and through my pen and coop and it left. Two days later I realized it has been eating the eggs and entering through the open door when girls are out in the day. I set a minnow trap with eggs for bait next to the pen and caught it in 3 days. I'm pretty sure it's the one, anyway. So took it miles away and let him go.

By hand. Well I had gloves on. It was moving slower than normal becuz of the egg it’d just swallowed.

Someone told me a while back, that if you have an egg eating snake problem, the best method of getting rid of the snake is to keep fake eggs made of something hard like stone in the nest and let the snake eat it. Don't know that I recommend this method as I am sure it's unpleasant for the snake. But if you have a big problem with egg eating snakes, I guess it could be an option. We all have to do what is best for us and our flock, even though this would not be my choice for snakes, I thought I would pass it on anyway.

I heard people tell me about hollow glass eggs, the egg would shatter and snake would die of internal bleeding. My biggest worry is that my chickens would find the dead snakes and start pecking at it and eat broken glass just to have the same happen to them.

Rat snakes are attracted to rodent scent. It stumbled upon the eggs by accident. The O.P. has rodent pee and poo attracting the snake.
We have a rodent problem too. But only inherited the rat snake problem. Snakes stop looking for rodent dens when they fill up on egg too. Then the rodent population explodes. Chicken eggs interrupt the circle of life.

Hatched a clutch of those few years ago. Haven't had them in my coop and I'm surprised because they are the predominant species here. They went after the barn swallows on my porch by scaling the brick. I use orthene fire ant powder around the porch now to disrupt their sense of smell. No more on porch. Tried to find out what was used to make that product smell so bad to no avail.

Snakes have been scientifically proven to return to their previous haunts from 100 or more miles away. For an animal lacking legs and feet snakes can really hoof it.
