Snake had duckling about halfway down (Now w/pics)

we had a 4ft snake at the bottom of our deck stairs a couple yr. ago and my hubby was freaking out. (scared of snakes) The snake had a bulge like it had eaten something. My hubby takes a pole and swings hitting the snake right below the bulge. It split open and a giant toad hopped out! It was still alive!!! I felt bad and for the slime covered toad and hosed him off. It was crazy! I don't think they always kill before they swollow unless they think they need to.

That's one lucky duck and very sweet looking too!

Definitely not naming it Lucky! Plus Lucky's not very original! I'll watch him for a couple days and if he makes it through then I will have to have BYC'ers come up with a name!

he loves to just hunker down in your lap.

One of our ducklings was missing from our free range flock this afternoon. After a few minutes of searching, I found its body under the flock's favourite bush. I suspect a snake tried to eat it, but after swelling the head and neck, regurgitated the duckling back out. I assume it was the work of a snake because the head and neck was really "slick", and the rest of the body remained fluffy. Also, there were no sign of blood or open wound. It sucks to find a dead bird, but it's better than having it missing and guess it would eventually come home.

Darn Black Snakes!

We have them here in NC.

They get really really big, and the only reason I've never killed one is because they keep the bugs down and they also kill and eat copperhead snakes [much more scary than a black snake] .

My mom cut a tree down once and there was a 7' black snake coiled around one of the branches....*shiver*

I hate snakes, if I were you, I would have cut it's head off and burnt it's body! Snakes are like dogs :/ Once they find a food source, they'll usually be back.

I'm glad your little duck made it!
What a crazy story, and how lucky you were to have caught the snake in time!!

I haven't tried this yet, but I heard leaving out hard-boiled eggs to feed the snake might kill it. The snake will eat swallow the whole egg, and then tries to crush it inside its belly. Since the hard-boiled egg doesn't get crushed, it could choke the snake.

i don't think I will try this because:
1. The snake might be 6 feet giant who probably won't die because of a hard-boiled egg.
2. I could inadvertently be feeding racoons and possums.
