Snake ID please

It was next to my koi pond. It didn’t move when I “pet” it. But when I moved it’s tail it went into the pond and swam under a bridge. The chickens are safe but I hope it doesn’t eat fish.
I’m thinking garter snake? It was about 2 -3 ft. I’ve only seen tiny ones before. I don’t know how big they get.

It's a grass snake. Harmless, but will eat eggs if it finds them

i think it could be a garter snake (probably has multiple names). as boskelli said, they are fine.
(their pee smells AWEFUL though.)

It's a garter snake. Non venomous and a friendly garden friend!

She's a harmless Eastern Garter Snake (T. sirtalis sirtalis) and is very beneficial to have around. They will not bother eggs nor birds. She may however snack on small fish and frogs. She's gorgeous!

What a Blessing. You must have a healthy environment to have such a healthy beautiful snake in your yard.

Reminds me of finding a similar sized black snake around my pond, was fun watching it.
But came back out an hour later and it had a fish in it's mouth.
I grabbed the snake, it dropped the fish, I dropped the snake.

Garter Snake. They eat crickets, grasshoppers, june bugs and such. My guinea hens killed and ate one last year.
