Snake in coop

Hi, everyone-
Just wanted to share I just killed a copperhead in my duck/geese coop. I’m officially freaked out and now second guessing about the safety of my feathered babies and coop design.
I’ve mentioned before about my sad luck. I’m having an ant mound problem that I’m trying to fix and now I had to come face to face with this now dead snake. Scared the c!#p out of me. I suppose we can only do so much for our charges.

OMG I've never seen a copperhead that big and I live in Georgia. Two years ago I killed five copperheads on path to coop in early spring,they were pencil size to largest 2foot.hubby told me I must have Disturbed a nest. but I had no idea they got that big! you guys be careful out there, stomp your feet when walking this time year& going to Coop or something and as far as the ants concerned Andro is the best ant killer in the world. you can sprinkle it next to the ant beds and watch them come out and take it down in the mound.Now you've got me sitting here worrying about my little girls.Oh! do be careful spring is definitely here in the south!

I'm 28 and very old-school I farm with my chickens the way my great uncle Coleman did..,he'd go out and find a black snake big enough for the chickens to not mess with but small enough to not mess with the chickens..and he'd throw it into the hen house and it would stay there living happily amongst the flock eating mice and stuff that come after the chicken food and cracked corn...but once he noticed the snake was eating the eggs he'd grab it by the tip of the tail and with a good hard flip of the wrist he'd fling the snakes head off..and yes I do mean whT I said..I do the same...and when the snake gets greedy well it gets dead...ATM I got a roughly 5 foot black snake living in my hen house and none of the hens or roosters pay it any mind and it has kept the feed fresh by eating the rats and mice and moles and stuff that come in Fter the stuff it has even ate a few weasels for me...it's naMe is willy.

But copper heads r a different story tho

I've never been to Bogalousa, but back in the day I remember them having a fantastic Lil League team. My people are from SW Louisiana. How they got there is a whole 'nother story.

Well, it kept a snake in. We killed one and tossed it in the run for the chickens to eat. I guess it had a bit more life left and it got all tangled up in the netting while trying to get out of the run.
I think the trick to the netting is what you saw in the video. Loosely about, not tight and neat. If it was placed tightly, I imagine a determined snake may very well break it. It's flimsy stuff.
I have it between my hoop coop "walls" and predator apron. Since placing it, I've not had a single snake in it other than the one I mentioned above. I have had to put some of it back in place from time to time because mice will move it to get to the chicken feed. I fixed that, too. Grandpa's Feeders eliminated mice stealing chicken feed.

You have a snake living with your chickens? I read that right? Sounds like a natural pest deterrent. If you are old school farmer, sounds like you know what you are doing! I always say sometimes the old ways are the best ways. Just depends.
Copperheads are in league of their own.

Hi-well I think it’s a rat snake. I usually come across copperheads. I made a mistake. It was a big snake and I was in adrenaline mode removing it from the coop. Had so many things going on in my head at the time. The pattern threw me off a little and I have been corrected a couple of times on the Id. I get them confused. I apologize.

Thanks again for adding about Amdro-that’s what everyone is saying to use. I’ve personally never tried it. May be doing that since nothing else seems to be working.

I lived in Mandeville for 8-9 years then left a few years after Katrina. Placed changed after the storm. Maybe we passed on the street lol.
