I hate snakes!!

Definately a rat snake. They aren't poinsonous but are VERY mean. They will, as posted by someone else, not only eat your chicks but also your eggs. Oh and your mice

I HATE HATE HATE snakes! I don't much care who like it or not, if it comes near my house, it's as good as dead. I keep my brooders in the house. Everyone has moved outside into the coop except for 2 little banties that are only about a month old. There is a cat around here that I don't trust.

just a question. if lets say the snake JUST ate the baby chick.... would it still be alive to cut the snake open and pull it out? i know its gross but if the snake ate it without constricting??

no the stomach acid of a snake is supper strong, it would be mostly digested already, one snake ate another snake (both corns) and the 'victim' ate out the side right past the throat- the 'victim' was melted- the scales had disintegrated already in the acid- both died.

Probably not. Even if the snake didn't constrict, they usually start at the head and work thier way down. And they don't just take it down instantly. They stretch their jaws and work one side of their mouth and then the other pulling it over the wider areas of their prey. Like shoulders, the stomach and in back legs. Once they have those parts past their jaws, they use the muscles and make their body into an "S" shape to squeeze the animal down to their stomach. By the the chick gets down that far, he hasn't been able to breathe for 2-10 minutes depending on how big the snake was compared to its prey.

NOW, I have caught snakes in the act of eating something, even other snakes and freed it and the prey survived.

Honestly, if I had caught it eating eggs, or just in the cage, I really wouldn't of minded. I don't kill on site. I have never killed anything in my life. I've found and released many snakes around the property before. It was just that I caught it with one of the little chickies in it, I was so mad and don't want a chicken murdering snake coming back for more. It was too fat to get back out of the cage too because of it's chick meal.

Glad to know it wasn't venomous, thanks everyone. In any other setting than munching on my chickens I would of found it very pretty and interesting.
