down here in south ms we call them chicken snakes guss why thay eat chicks and eggs but thay really do keep the rats under controll also we build our coops and broders with them in mind .
use the smaller wire build titer corners to keep them out as a rule that only go after the small chicks and eggs not to bad if you keep them in mind while building .

Snakes have been my main problem more than any other predator. I've used mothballs, sulfer, the smallest chicken wire I could find etc... to deter them to no avail. If a snake wants your chicks or chickens, they're going to find a way to get them no matter what you do. I've lost alot of chicks and almost lost a full grown buff orpington hen to a 5 foot long chicken snake. Needless to say, I've killed most of them and fortunately there hasnt been any poisonous ones to deal with yet.

We have a lot of rattlesnakes in our area and I've found them in my yard. It's impossible to get rid of all of them, I have 10 acres of open field with hundreds of gophers living there for the snakes to eat. I've never had such a large snake so close to the house as the one who ate my chicks last year. He was at least 6 feet long and as big around as my wrist. He wasn't a rattler though.
I have a very tiny dog that would attack a snake if she saw it so they ALL have to go when I find them. She plays with the lizards in the yard and I don't think she would know the difference between lizards and snakes.

We're in the process of building a coop, bought 100ft of 1/2" hardware cloth to cover the whole thing. Would be finished now but husband got called in the work a 120 hour shift. They were staying in the laundry room, in a cage, while they grew more.

I've brought them into the spare bedroom for tonight, I don't want to go through that again with the little chicks.

If you know you have a snake eating your eggs or your baby chicks and you can't catch him put a golf balls in the nesting boxes. The snakes will eat the golf balls and die. WE notice Monday that we had some eggs missing. So yesterday we put a couple of golf balls in the nesting boxes. Today at lunch the balls were still there. A hour ago when we went back to check on the chickens 1 of the golf balls were gone. It has always worked in years past. I hope this helps.

We live in the country and I have killed Black snakes, chicken snakes and Copper heads all going after eggs. I hate to kill any snake but when they are after my eggs and chicks I will get rid of them.
