Snake needs to die....how?

We had problems last summer with juvenile rattlesnakes - not sure at what age they become a threat - and the juveniles are tough to ID. We don't have a rodent issue - the stray cats keep them in check.

My plan for now is to wait until it gets cooler out in the hope that the cooler temps will slow it down enough to be able to identify it before the hoe (or hammer) drops. It was about the thickness of two of my fingers, so not a big one, but not tiny by any means.

Well, given the very folks you are addressing with this would be members of BYC (many of whom have experience equal to or exceeding the "40 years of raising fowl" you so love to proclaim in your responses), I would say the bolded is one of the most ridiculous things I've read in a good while.

Apologies for opening a can of worms (or snakes as the case may be). After working at a university for 20 years, I have come to accept that not everyone thinks the same say, but that everyone's opinions need to be heard and respected....not agreed with, necessarily. For example, I don't/won't eat lima beans, but I love Brussels sprouts. Sorry again, and enjoy the weekend!

Didn't mean to offend you.Im in rural Texas and had a terrible snake prob.I am proud of the 40 years of raising fowl and 25 in the USMC serving this country.

Can of worms!! all good fun, I completley understand where you are coming from - anything that hurts my chooks gets good can of whoop *** (pardon the pun). Its very scary having snakes and I am sure it was a responsive action that many would have taken, so don't beat yourself up. The world can do without one snake, spiders on the other hand, well now...they also have purpose in nature - but not in my house - I can't even get close to killing them they frighten me so much.

I can live with snakes and spiders but have to draw a line at Brussels sprouts...no way, those just are not happening.

Not sure on your bird house construction, but I have never seen a rattle snake climb a pole or tree (unless it is knocked over)

Rattle snakes are a coil and strike kinda snake, and rely on venom to kill, then they swallow the dead critter ... they do not have muscles like a constrictor type snake that squeezes the prey to death, this muscle tone also allows them to climb trees ...

357 Mag will kill'em dead though!
