Snake Specialists and Snake Lovers!! Help Me Please?

I commend you for sparing the snakes life! Snakes do so much good for the farmstead and I get sad when I see so much wanton snake killing out of fear. I do suggest that next time if you are not sure if it is poisonous that you use a trash can or something similar to transport it. Just as a precaution. Thanks again for sparing that snake!

yea, a venomous snake can tag you through a pillowcase no problem so please please just be careful next time. I'd hate to hear of anyone nearly dying of a snake bite that could have been avoided.

But good on you for saving it's life! Too much wanton snake killing in the world. Unless I find it eating/hurting/threatening my animals I'm just going to shoo it away where the dog or chicken wont find it for sport.

Hey RoPo, good save. But....... I caught a copperhead last summer who didn't have that viper jaw. But boy did he give my dog a bad case of the blues.

Apparently the smaller ones don't have it as much.

DH says Gopher or Prairie King, good snake to have around. He raised snakes for years.

Look at the pupil. When the snake bites you from being so close, you'll have your answer

If you start to swell up and feel excruciating pain, it is venomous. If you just have a bleeding wound it's not.

99% of all venomous snake bites are to the hands, and most occur to males between the ages of 16 and 28 - can come to many solid conclusions based on that alone

Yup! That's about the way it goes in SC anyway!

TwistedSerpent, the ONE rule here regarding snakes is if you can't identify it 100%, then get the heck out of there.

We do sometimes move the larger (5'+) non-venomous snakes to a Nature Preserve about 8 miles away from here. Game warden says it's okay. We have two 5 gallon bucket and lid sets, well drilled for ventilation, and several hooked snake sticks for handling.
