snake under broody!!!

Heck, I've seen my chickens kill and eat snakes, granted they were those red-racers or garter snakes. It was quite a hoot to watch them race around and fight over who was gonna get to eat the biggest chunk of it, and nobody could stand still long enough to get it eaten for quite awhile. By that time, it was ripped apart into such small pieces.

I had that problem too. My little banty hen was off her nest too early in the day. I knew something was wrong so I checked the nest and there was about a 4-5 foot rat snake eating one of the eggs. She is only sitting on two eggs now.

YUCK! I hate snakes! I hope I never find one with my chickens. I even scream when I'm on the lawn tractor and come across one in the grass. Shiver.

Man! The differences in the problems with chicken raising in the various areas of the country are something! Here, I protect my snakes from my chickens. It is a rare thing to have a snake in your yard, so the fact that I actually have more than one is pretty cool, and when he screws up and gets in the coop,(he is pretty small), I have to rescue him before he gets smacked up too bad. I actually hate mice with a purple passion, and we keep the snakes around to eat the mice, and the fact that the chickens love mice as well, provides endless amusement for me and the kids, we even named it, "Mouse football". When a mouse is found in the feed, I usually shriek in a high pitched voice for my oldest son or ex-husband, they come out and scoop it up and then throw it into the run and the game is on. We have had games that lasted for more than 10 minutes, and it keeps the chickens active and on the hunt. Up here, mice carry Hanta virus, and spread it in their urine, so the more the chickens eat, the better. They are actually performing a community service.

, just so long as they dont touch my snake!

Your right about protecting your snake. We need them to control the rat population. It's not hard for rat's to become over populated and create problem's. I'm a professional snake handler and catcher. Although if you find a snake getting your egg's it's there for life because that's a food source for the snake. That's when it's time to take action and catch the snake and relocate. Also if you see a snake around you have to concider if it's large enough to eat a chick or egg. If it's not I wouldn't worry about it. Also if you are afraid of snake's just remember the snake is more afraid of you. I can help with any question's on this subject. PEACE
