Snake

If your doorstep is made of brick, concrete or other material like that there is your reason why the snake was there. He or she was likey trying to simply get warm as snakes cannot regulate their own body temp. That being said in many places it is against the law to keep native species as pets, so you might want to check your local laws. People do keep gopher snakes as pets and you can even buy them from breeders online, but taking one out of the wild and bringing it in if temps and surroundsings are not the same can cause the animal to go into shock. If you do decide to keep the snake look up care sheets, they are fairly easy to find on many websites and also talk to an expiernced breeder who can tell you more about them.

actually a lot of petshop snakesm are wildcaught or the females were caught before they could lay their eggs, coralled in an area until they lay the eggs and then released. The babies are then send by the bad load to the US. Thats how you get 30$ unsexed BPs.

He is a beauty. I tend to keep those I find at this time of the year and raise them up if babies till next Spring. That way they survive the winter. But in your area that might not be such an issue. We have red and black rats here. My first thought when I saw your was gopher. They are good mousers and probably lives somewhere real near your place. If he is there he has a good food source so let him go to do his job before you get over run with mice.

you should keep him till wenters over and he will be worm and safe and feed good so he has to be happy insted of being cold and hongry.

Yeah, I would let it go. I kept a big black snake, and it ate great in the beginning. Then it just stopped. I had to keep it over winter then release it, trying to get it to eat the whole time. It lived, but I felt awful. Now I just admire them outside.
