I have always been terrified of snakes, but I realize their place in the world, and decided that if I learn about them, I might be able to overcome the fear. I now don’t panic when I see one and can take the time to I.d. And even relocate them. Still can’t touch them, although I spent over an hour early one Sunday AM cutting a king snake out or bird netting! This is a pic of one in my nest box which is on level with my face so when I looked in for eggs he and I were eye to eye! I screamed, he dropped the egg and went behind the box. I went in got the phone and called someone to come get him. He came back out and tried to eat again so I snapped his pic

You wouldn't do that here in South Texas, because it would probably be a rattle snake. We slam on the brakes alright, right on top of'em.

Oooh, lucky thing for you that was not phrased as "I bet"... :gig Because, yeah, I do this with rattlesnakes too. Very sadly, where I live now, the elevation is too high for them, so I would not see them these days. Only if I went down to a lower elevation to visit a friend etc.

To me, a snake is just another animal, I treat them with respect like I do all animals. One reason I particularly encourage snakes here is the very high population of prairie dogs... which were brought in and dumped here by people who trapped them at their house, and brought them out to the "country". They were not native to my area but now are an invasive pest. Rattlesnakes would be a welcome predator, that would help to keep their numbers in check. Ah well. Gopher snakes are good too, glad we do have those.
