Snakes

triple are you trying to say a garter snake is dangerous to people? If so please provide proof.

They are dangerous to baby frogs and tadpols yes. The ONLY thing a garter snake can do to a person is musk them with scat. EVEn if a garter snake bites you 100 times it will not be able to inject you or a kid with enough venom to feel anything. Even if it chews you. Do you have any reports of them making a person sick? there has been no deaths.

I said there was a slim chance of being bit with the fangs BUT there is a chance. If one were to bite somebody and "chew" it could be bad.

I have heard of one death from a garter snake bite. It was a rare thing, the person probably had an alergic reaction to the venom. I don't even know if it is documented on the internet. "Experts" can't even decide if they have venom or just toxic saliva OR small fangs or some special kind of teeth in the back of their mouth. But they do have the gland behind their eye similar to the kind venomous snakes have. All I know is that I am not messing with one - and I am not scared of non-venomous snakes.

That's very interesting. I had no idea they even had venom if any sort. I generally see a snake a just let it be. Normally they aren't eating all my eggs tho and even then I did manage to get it into a 5 gal bucket n relocate it. I know I don't know enough about them so I just respect them n thier space. Lol. According to the research I did, garter snakes top out at about 4 ft? Is this correct cuz our snake measured out at 5ft 1in. I am very curious cuz I just do not know alot about snakes. Ty for all the input n future help. ;-)

Your welcome. There is a lot of conflicting information about Garter Snakes but they aren't like other "non-venomous" snakes. Some of them do get pretty big, I guess the old well fed ones. There are different kinds but yes, just a little over 4 feet is what I have read too. Snakes are really pretty interesting creatures if you do learn about them. Having chickens you will probably run into several so it is best to be able to identify "who's who" so you know what you are dealing with. Even that wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't for the venomous ones. You sure wouldn't want to be bit by one of those! Take care and enjoy your chickens! :)

@Chickenlvr4... One thing I told you that may not be accurate (or confusing) is about the diamond markings on the snake you saw/killed. It is easy to forget that there are different kinds of the same snake across the country. When I think of "diamond" markings on a snake I think of a gray rat snake. There are several others with diamond markings, some venomous and some not. I guess that markings on some Garter Snakes could be considered diamonds too. The one in my location has "checkered" pattern mixed in. That might be described as a "diamond" pattern by some people. Snake identification can be difficult but it is a really good thing to try to learn.

Ratsnakes and kingsnakes are good snakes to have around. They eat everything tho, rats/mice/lizards/eggs/chicks, but are good pest control in general and non venomous.
Diamond markings with no rattle could be a water snake, many diff breeds, they're a heavy bodied breed down here that makes me nervous each time I have to ID one lol but NEVER assume a snake is harmless. Any snake, just to be on the safe side until you can get an ID. Don't have to kill them. We relocate all King snakes, water snakes and garters constantly, they come back often so need to go a fee miles away. Cottonmouths and Copperheads are usually put down if a rescue won't take them :(
I was losing eggs awhile back...finally saw a rat snake, so did my hens, they stomped and killed it but did not eat it.

Good chickens! lol I do know a guy whose RIR chickens killed a 5+ foot rat snake. I believe it is kind of rare but it does happen. I hope mine will take care of snakes like that.

I wish I had all of your king snakes! I have what seems like an infestation of rat snakes! True, the king snakes will kill other snakes including venomous ones. Rat snakes are hard to keep out of a coop because they climb so dang well.

yes I totally agree w learning and identifying all that I can. I always take pics and spend hours looking up local snakes. I live in savannah ha and I also live close to a marsh it very well could have been more checkered than diamond. Please privately message me n ill send my video n pics. I'm dying to know what it was. It broke my heart to have to kill it ( my hubby did the deed) because I really don't mind them. They have a needed place in the ecosystem. ;-). I'd dearly appreciate a good ID on this snake :). Ty!!
