Last night I went outside, tucked all five chickens into the coop on the porch and put the tarp over the coop so they wouldn't get wet since it was raining. Unknown to me while I was getting the tarp one of our chickens, Olliver, had undid one of the latches and snuck out of the coop. I noticed the loose latch but since the door won't open wide with just one undone didn't think anything about it and fixed it, put the tarp over them and went inside. Apparently Olliver had been waiting at the door and came in with me and I just didn't see him over the pile of newspapers I was carrying in from my car. I go in the kitchen and fix a cup of hot chocolate and come back into the living room to sit down and watch TV a bit before bed and my son comes into the living room. "Ummm mommy did you put all the chickens up for me?" I told him I had and he gets this weird look on his face and says ok and goes back to his room. A few minutes later it hits me that something was up, I go into his room to check on him and my son was laying in his bed covered up and reading one of his dinosaur books. My automatic thought was that everything was ok, but as I turned to leave the room I saw something move under the cover. When I ask him he just looks at me, I walk over and pull back the blanket and snuggled in the bed is Olliver, who didn't appreciate being covered up but was happy as can be to be on the bed. My son looks at me and simply said that he had to cover the chicken up or I would have taken her back outside. I don't know who is worse, Olliver at sneaking in the house or my nine year old son doing all he can to make Olliver an inside chicken. Needless to say Olliver did go back outside, where he woke all the other chickens up fussing, and I am installing a better latch system on the coop today.
