Sneeze into your SLEEVE??!! Are you KIDDING me?!

I can see both side of the pictures........unexpected sneezes, yes I can see that having to sneeze in the crook of your arm. However a flu, allergies or cold, nooooooooooooo! Use a Kleenex for goodness sakes!

Horse snots are the worst I've deal with......sheer sticking mess! Thought dogs are bad but the horse's snots are BAD. Worse when they have their colds or URT infections or strangles or an isolated grass seed up in their nostril.

That is really gross. One time my son was holding our ferret on his shoulder, and I went over to give her some sugar. We would always touch noses when ds held her. This time, she sneezed in my face as soon as I got close. Animals have no manners.

Yuckieee!

Those ads are here too Cyn, and they say Kleenex is not enough. I gather according to research the average sneeze goes right through them and leaves germs on your hands, which you then touch things like door nobs with and spread the illness. Yes it's disgusting to have your sleeve honked on but you don't open doors or handle money with your elbows right? I have seen many folk lay a Kleenex into their elbow, I guess that's the compromise.

Even better yet IMO now the ads are also suggesting anyone with the flu or a cold STAY HOME to prevent the spread. Now there is the injection of common sense if you ask me! Also here they are pushing hand washing hard in flu seasons, which should have a bigger impact, and yes, should have been taught by Mom.

And where does that kleenex go if you there's no trashcan around? I'm betting into the pocket... What goes in a pocket? The hand?

Speckled, I also have to politely disagree with you. People don't carry hankies, or kleenex, etc, anymore. Droplet born pathogens are far more readily spread if sneezed into the air or your hand. So, unless you are a walking Purell bottle the risk of spreading everything from rhinovirus to TB. Coughing/sneezing into a sleeve will decrease the potential spread of any of the droplet born pathogens. It will not stop it completely but otherwise your a walking typhoid Mary. It may not be the most attractive advise, but it's for good reason.

Is this being taught as what should always be done, or what should be done when caught by an unexpected sneeze?

If I have a cold, I have Kleenex on me, and a pocket to put them in, if I go out at all. I use the arm thing if an unexpected tickle catches me, in preference to my hand. That's usually not a snotty sneeze anyway --- not to say it couldn't transmit disease if a cold is brewing.

If they're teaching using arms when you already have a cold, I'm as disgusted as the OP.

Sneezing into the crook of your arm is only an alternative to sneezing into your cupped hands, especially for kids. It makes perfect sense to me. Where are you more apt to spread germs?, from your hands or the crook of your arm?

When we had the flu swine scare, Obama came on prime time and told us to wash our hands. You couldn't find hand sanitizer on the shelves in stores. Of course Obama got a lot of flack about it. Americans know to wash their hands. That's why when you're in the Mens room you see guys use the urinal and walk right out the door.

Yeah it's gross when a horse sneezes on you.

for handwashing, too bad more people dont do it.

As for horse snot? You gotta admit though, nothing is sweeter than a kiss from a horse shnozzle.

Mythbusters actually just did a show on this one. They swished dye in their mouths and then sneezed over a grid. They then took high speed video of them sneezing and tried all three methods. They sneezed into their hands. They sneezed into a hankie and then they sneezed into their elbow. It was remarkably gross when you could see where the spray hit. The sneeze into the hand covered their hand and face with dye (aka germs) and got all over the paper grid. The hankerchief sneeze bled through the hankie and still got on the guy's hand AND it made it past the hand onto the paper grid. The elbow sneeze got the germs on the shirt, but nothing made it past to the paper grid, nothing got on his hands and very little was on his face. It was remarkable.
While it is a little wierd after being taught to sneeze into a tissue all my life, it made a visually dramatic presentation. I know I would rather be around someone sneezing into their shirt rather than sneezing into their hand and then touching everything around me. Ugg.
