sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

Quote:
So does that mean that every drop off or "free to good home" adopted cat or dog gets care denied too? After all, their care is more than what they cost.

Yeah, I know...

Chickens are apparently just not considered pets, they're "food items" and not worth the care or trouble.

I'm glad to know otherwise!

Update on my sick hen, Antoinette:

She has been in the house and on antibiotics for 3 days now (72 hours), she loves the "hilton hen hospital" but she is not getting better, in fact she is getting worse. She's in good spirits and not cold anymore however on top of the constant sneezing and leaky nose she is now gurgling and wheezing -

She's eating well, her poops look normal, she's alert and bright-eyed but oh, she sounds terrible like her lungs are full of stuff.

I don't know what to do anymore, nobody will treat her.

How long do the antibiotics take to start working?

you're such a good momma. Just keep her warm and comfy and, hopefully, she'll get better. If it is a virus then you have let it run its course and prepare yourself for whatever outcome.

I don't know what to do either. I do know what I do for myself. I rarely get sick, haven't been to the DR. in over ten years and then I think it was a muscle pull. I do get that crappy "start" to a cold once a year or so. When that happens I zap myself with 3 or 4000mg of vitamin C.

What I would do...not that you should...do a best guess interpolation weight to minimum daily requirement (MDR) maybe?. So if human MDR is 500mg(don't know) and I take 6 - 8 times that in a zap dose. Maybe you could find an MDR for chickens?...really don't know though. I'd know that vitamins are given to chickens for various reasons but a chicken is not a human. DO NOT construe this as advice, but rather as an avenue to hash through.

Then toss in a prayer <---you can take this as advice---can't hurt. Tossed one for you already...
good luck

Is she still eating or are you giving her food she will eat? If she is on antibiotics she needs some yogurt as the meds kill the good bacteria as well as any bad.. Viral infections do have to run their course but how long that takes depends on her immune system. Getting proper vitamins and probiotics and calories for energy are an integral part of allowing her body to fight a virus. Fluid intake is equally important as her body systems will shut down without it so keep up that support. You are doing a good job keeping her warm and clean so just add the support system if not doing so already. I send my good wishes for her to get well.
