Wisco,
I am in Oregon WI... I had two bouts in the last two years of gurgling, coughing chickens, and some unexpected deaths too. We went to Farm and Fleet and got some Tetracycaline.
Water soluable and did it for 10 days at a time. I also went to my local farmer's co-op and got a chicken/poultry lice powder, last year.
I got some polish bantams from a lady on the CL out of Fort Atkinson and they came with mites. I had to cut off half their top hat feathers to remove tons of eggs, and to be able to get
into to the feathers to powder them.
There are a lot of available items at Farm and Fleet, I am going to get some black sunflower seed and hard boil some eggs for my flock.
I am dealing with a different thing with a chick who is a frizzle that after a month suddenly has issues with its legs.
Hang in there!!

Oh WOW!! Figures bout the time I stop logging on after being on here 4 times a day I get some great info!
Well I finished my 7 days of duramycin, dusted the girls with 7-dust and cleaned the coop and dusted it. Haven't lost any other girls!

They all seem super healthy and happy! Will have to follow up on the dust. Been feeding them lots of fresh pumpkins, cucumbers, squash, and sunflower heads.. I will be trying to introduce a few more birds soon before closing my flock. I am still wondering if maybe the lice/mites were breaking down immune systems(sneezing) and killing them? Well they all been being inspected daily and I havn't seen anymore..Sooo

dsqard, eggsited, jenski, chickenpiedpiper, and WIChookchick Thanks for the words of encouragement sorry if I was a lil whiny but brand new to chickens and just want to do whats best! I found a local vet that deals with chickens and I'm gonna take a poop sample in and see what floats lol, just cause! After I get my other coupla girls I'm gonna go ahead and worm them all. just cause! I sure have learned alot from this episode and will be more prepared if and when something happens again. I am not interested in bringing in any other birds once I get my mixed flock of 12 So if they are carriers I guess I'm o.k. with it? I was just throwing veggies in their run and leaving it, now they have a feed pan, that gets emptied every 2 days! I am now going to quarintine any new birds! I will first find out whats going on with my birds next time before treating! You should worm chickens! 7 dust works great for lice/mites! Oh I could go on thanks guys/gals! Peace W.C.

So glad to hear that things are going much better!!! Yes, I would definitely quarantine the next bunch you get before adding them in to the ones you have. Some people say two weeks some say a month. I waited two weeks before introducing my new ones to my original four. They are still in separate coops right now so they just interact during free range. It has been over three weeks and the new ones are all healthy so I am probably going to put them all together today. My main worry right now is hoping they all get along. Keep reading on here. Lots of good information and keep asking questions.

My own preference for respiratory problems is Tylan 50 (Tylosin), a powerful antibiotic that has an injectible and an oral form. This is serious stuff, though, so if you decide to do this as a new owner please PM me and I can help you with the process. Treating this incorrectly, or purchasing the wrong strength of Tylan, can kill your birds.

I know it has been years since you posted this but I am wondering if you can either PM me or reply on the thread with advice on how to use Tylan 50 properly. I have brought home two sneezing (about 10 mth old) silkies. one stopped sneezing after the 2nd day of using sulmet. the other one is still sneezing after two weeks. used sulmet for 7 days, then electrolytes, ACV and GSE in water. Now I am trying cephalexin but no improvement after 2 days.

they are quarantined and I am practicing proper bio-security.
Lice and Mites are easy to get rid of. I used to use the seven dust and the diatomaceous earth, but still had the problem, then some fellow chicken friends turned me on to the pour on ivermectin for cattle. At night I went into the coop and put one CC on the back of the neck of every single bird, and 1/2 on small birds like my Old English.
I wish you luck, and please feel free to contact me if I can help any further... (if I have been any help this time!)

A~

I have the injectable Ivermectin. will that work to pour on?

I have hear both 2-4 but after reading about some of the illnesses, some of them dont incubate for 21 days, so I think I will wait the entire 30 from now on. It's hard being a new chicken owner.
Mycoplasma synoviae infection, M.s. Infectious Synovitis

Infection is via the conjunctiva or upper respiratory tract with a long incubation period, 11-21 days following contact exposure.

I used Tylan 50 injectable for a respiratory problem on my chickens. They are all small bantams and I injected 0.1-0.2cc in the skin on their necks. It worked great!
