It's April in Wisconsin and I should have known better than to think the snow was behind us... but I was so happy to open the windows in my chicken coop and to welcome my first broody hens. Well, now I've got two mamas with babies in the coop and two mamas in an uninsulated broody box in the run, all of whom eagerly want to bring their babies out again today in the sleet and I am freaking out. I also have big chickens who can't hang in the coop all day but who will be soaked when they do come in and I took their heating lamps down. ARGH! This is more of a vent than anything, but I keep telling myself that chickens have lived successfully for many years without heroic measures of human intervention... right?

I had a broody with babies this time last year and they did fine. I do not heat my coop or anything.

Newaygo Michigan
your like a hour from me!

Weather here is ICK too but ours havent gone out yet, thank goodness. Im too much of a momma hen, I would end up dragging my babies back into the house. Anyone ever litter box train a chicken?

Well, everyone lived! We made a "solar house" for the ladies in the broody box to have their chicks out in and the mamas in the coop spent the day ranging indoors with their little ones. But man, I am SO READY to be done with snow. Ugh.

Hello neighbor! Check out the link in my siggy about the upcoming Michigan chickenstock.
I have 34 babies in the basement. 15 of them are four weeks old and they are starting to get a bit noisy. Maybe it will warm up enough this weekend to move them out to the coop

You & me both! I just hope the weathermen aren't wrong about it being 60 by Tuesday.
Where about in WI are you, if I may ask?
So happy to hear everyone is doing good. That was some ugly weather the past 2 days!
