Snow? No Thank You.

85 degrees for a high today in south Texas. Same for tomorrow and Thanksgiving. (Sigh).....

It is now 20 deg F outside, and it is getting dark. We came home from Costco from the last minute Thanksgiving shopping, to find the 2 Delawares, and 1 Buff Orp having a stroll IN the snow. Ok...

Cochins, Silkies and Polish are all tucked in the chicken house.. and tonight, the temp is supposed to drop into the teens. No way was I going to risk having the adventurous ones still wander out in the fading light. So me and the DH had to go out, coo and cluck, and try to get the hens to come out from under the back wooden deck. Managed to catch 2 and pack them home, and one more, we had to watch from a distance till she walked home by herself. After 20 min trying to herd chickens home before the cold snap, we're the ones feeling the freeze thinking the getting them home part won't take 2 mins.

Silly chickens..and silly humans, cos now my fingers are frozen (didn't wear gloves) and hubby is not feeling his toes (didn't wear socks). The things we do for chickens we love...

1-3 inches of snow expected plus below freezing temperatures means it'll probably stick!!!!

I'm excited, but my chickens seem to be a bit less enthusiastic.

I covered my shelf perches with hay and moved all of the chickens to the same corner after it was dark instead of them sleeping all alone where there wasn't hay. I also made a little bed of hay on the floor of the coop for the ducks and Gertrude, my leftover cornish cross hen who can't fly to the roost. They all just fluffed up the hay and looked content and happy.

My cochins stayed locked up in a cage full of hay. I had to blowdry their feet after the snow stuck to the feathers and melted.
