So…What is this on her cob?

Hi Everyone,

This morning I found this little girl with these growths or hurts on her cob. I know it could be pecking order problem because she is at the bottom of the totem pole.

But, just in case it's something more critical. Here are some pictures. She is 6-7 months old. A leghorn. No other signs of being sick.

I would assume just a pecking injury. Pretty hen. I hope she heals quickly

It could be fowl pox... my leghorn had similar (but much smaller/fewer) black spots that lasted about 6wks, gave her lots of vitamin tonic in water and kept a close eye on her. She looked a bit sorry for herself for a while but has bounced back to usual self now

It looks like some severe pecking. Occasionally fowl pox scabs are black, but usually are tan to brown, and separate scabs. Here is a link about fowl pox to see the difference in pictures:

How many chickens do you have and how big is the area they are in? Do they get outside in the daytime to free range? What other breeds are there?

Hi, It turned out to be pecking. The black scabs are falling of. We are keeping an eye on the top hens to see who is the bully. Thank you for your help. Natalia

I have 45 chickens, three of them are roosters and one is a guinea hen,. They all free range our 5 acres. At night they all roost in the coop and a small run for safety. The Henrietta is at the low end of the pecking order and provably is fighting for a nest to lay her eggs. But the older hens might be giving her a hard time. She will eventually find her place in he pecking order!

It's called a comb. Not cob.

I know. Thank you. A cob is from a fresh ear of corn. And the chickens have combs. Thank you for letting me know. It was a misprint in my rush to place the info.
