So long story short this chicken below we believe is our “free gift” from Murray McMurray. We ordered 15 hens and allowed them to send us a “free exotic chick” full knowing it would probably be a rooster. We are ok with one rooster.

In late May we received our 15 (+1) baby chicks. A few we still haven’t narrowed down what they are yet, but I think we are getting pretty close!

So this morning I was surprised to find a chick crowing! We didn’t see which one as they stopped when I got close, but we’re pretty sure it’s this one (Big Bertha). And this is one of the few we have not been able to identify so thinking she/he is the free exotic chick.

Could this be a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte?

By comb development only I’d say yes. You’re going to need ‘Big Bert’ to hold still for a good head shot, including neck. Side shot. And a good saddle area shot to confirm.

Thank you and I will. Grabbed this pic Friday night and it was the best one I had. Can grab more and better ones tomorrow. Really large chicken and spectacular colors. He/she is still not even 4 months of age so I’m sure will still change and grow more over the next 6 weeks.

It does look like a blue laced red wyandotte. Can you get a clear pic of the whole body from a profile view?

Thank you! I will tomorrow as they’re dreaming of worms right now. Going through Murray McMurrays catalogue the Wyandotte’s look to have the same body and the BLR Wyandotte the same colors. Excited to have a rooster. If indeed he is, he also is a gentle boy which is nice too!

For once, someone who actually is excited if it is a roo or a hen :lau

Thank you and agree. He is less then 4 months yet huge. So cockerel indeed! Just found a picture on the web of a BLRW that looks exactly like my guy!!! See below. Now I’ll have to be creative in the morning catching him in the crowing act. Again not 100% sure who was crowing but I did not order a BLRW so figuring he is my gift and probably a roo (cockerel). Thanks again!!
