My Cottage
Hi everyone. About 6 weeks ago I got a call about a rogue chicken running loose in the forest and making it's home at a home being remodeled. I rescued what I thought was a hen, but yesterday it became glaringly obvious that Lucy is really Lancelot.

I am not allowed to keep roosters and although several of my neighbors love the sound of a rooster crowing, there are also several mean spirited people in my neighborhood that love to call code enforcement anonymously and get you in trouble. So before that happens, I would like to find a home for this good fellow.

I have no clue what kind of chicken he is, but at this point he only crows a few times in the morning and otherwise is quiet, so far anyway. He isn't aggressive but he is skittish and while I do try to hold him once in a while, he doesn't really prefer that I do that. LOL!!! He isn't picking on any of my girls and sleeps outside of the coop by himself.

If anyone in the areas listed in my title can give this fellow a nice home, I would be happy to drive hime to you. I am disappointed he isn't a her, but what can you do? At least the coyotes didn't get him. He has been well fed and seems to have grown a bit since I got him and I treated him with Ivermectin pour on just in case while he was in isolation. He seems perfectly healthy now and has put on some weight. He was a bit thin and scrawny when he arrived. Thanks so much for your help.

Thank you. I would keep him if I could, but I don't need code enforcement sniffing around my property.
Totally understand. We are actually in a neighborhood however there are no CC&Rs. I have talked to all my neighbors and they all don't mind the crows (or so they say). My boys are silkies so they aren't quite as loud as regular sized roosters. Although I didn't want to do this at first, we ended up getting no-crow collars and while it doesn't stop the crowing it does decrease the volume and frequency of the crows. However I am too scared to tighten them anymore so they probably would be even more effective if I was using them correctly. But, maybe an option for you!

Thanks. I will check into that if I can't find him a new home. We don't have CC&Rs, but we aren't allowed to keep roosters despite the fact that we are in the mountains in a forest in an unincorporated part of the county.

We seem to be getting a lot of people moving up here lately that claim they want a mountain, country life style, but really, they want a city life in the forest and so they call code enforcement every time they don't like something you are doing.

So I try to comply as much as possible, be discrete and keep a clean coop etc. When I had my mini goat herd, I got cited 3 times as they said I had to have 2 acres of land to have 2 goats, but I could have 4 horse on 1/2 . Go figure. On the 3rd citation, I fought it and won but there is no guarantee I would be so lucky again.

Do the collars hurt them in any way?

Our area is also a rural forest area in the gold country and I agree on people wanting a city life in the mountains! I was really nervous on getting the collars because it seemed really inhumane and I did a ton of research. Basically what it does is restrict some of the air sacs so that the crow can't reach it's full volume. It's meant to be worn pretty tight, like a belt, but I read some horror stories about people putting them on too tight and suffocating their roosters. Because of this, and because the silkies are so fluffy, mine are looser than they are meant to be, but I find it still cuts down on the volume. When you first put it on they try to back out of it and I was worried I was hurting them but I stayed with them for about a half hour and they got used to it quickly. They don't even seem to notice them now.

Still looking for a home for this beautiful boy. If I had a large property and was allowed to have roosters, I would keep him, but I don't and I am not. He isn't mean so far but he is crowing. Not a lot, but enough to annoy the neighbors. I really need to get him re-homed before someone calls the authorities. Thanks in advance if you can give him a good home.

I am getting desperate. He is going off at 4 am every morning now. It is only a matter of time until someone calls code enforcement on me. I suppose no good deed goes unpunished. I doubt I will be rescuing any more chickens after this!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check with some feed stores, but the ones I use I have never seen them keeping any roosters at. I was hesitant to post on Craigslist as I was afraid someone would take him for fighting. I found a chicken breeder that will take him but he was very clear that he will be eaten. : (
