My 3 boys are going to start in 4-H this July. They want to do a poultry project. We have started reviewing breeds and making plans. We are in Southern California, (Inland Empire) area.

Look forward to learning from all of you.

Hello Deanna and welcome to BYC!

So glad you could join our community! You will want to start with some reading in our learning center here on BYC for lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

Here are a couple of nice breeds pages as well that might help you pick out some nice breeds...

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock and good luck in the 4-H!

Thank you. I'm not completely new to chickens, as we had chickens when I was growing up. The new part for me is finding 4-H quality stock and keeping them in the suburbs instead of a farm. Much more difficult to just keep 4 or 5 in a backyard.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might want to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors who might know of birds suitable for 4-H https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/161/california-southern or if you would consider shipping hatching eggs / birds, there are quite a few show line eggs/birds in the BYC Buy-Sell-Trade forum and on the breed threads. Good luck in your search. Also check out the BYC Coops section, some really nice small coops that even non chicken neighbors would think are cute. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops

Thank you! I'll check out those resources. I found a meet up for tomorrow a little while ago! Excited to go!
