So excited my son getting silkies for Christmas (newbies)

Hi All. New to this. Trying to put together a coop which
will be easy to clean and good for the chicks..
What kind of floor would be best I have some old
rubber mats I had in the garage was wondering
would that work? Any ideas would be helpful...Thanks
Can you give a better description of the coop? Is there
electricity to the coop? Dimensions? Where do you live?
Weather extremes? How old are the birds?
Thanks,
Karen

there are several silkie threads on BYC that may offer more specific info for you. My favorite is simply "Silkie thread." They are several others, if you put that in the search box, I would expect them to pop up. There is even a thread for grooming and Bathing silkies for show (or if they are just plan dirty)

PS you and your son might enjoy SHOWGIRLS", as well, they are quite unusual looking, and a variety of the Silkie breed. Type "Showgirls," in the search thread and be prepared for a surprise.

Welcome to BYC!

I have a walk in run/coop. It has a wooden floor that I have a rubber mat over so that I can sanitize it easier after any illness, annual sanitation, etc. It works for me but the run pat is all sand that gets raked up. They free range half the day, but even then they poop so much XD. We use the cheapest shavings available over that. Depending on how much you are looking to clean (deep bedding to as much as I do, 2 times a week) determines bedding thickness. I use a light, thin, layer of shavings. Just enough to prevent the poo from sticking and a soft place to land for them. Others use deep bedding and don't clean often, and it helps keeps chickens warm. Just toss the top layer on fresh every once and a while.

Best wishes with your new chickens!
