Hi! My kids and I are starting out with chickens, and I'm looking forward to learning a lot here.
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Totally new to chickens! I dreamed of having ducks when I was a kid, but my kids are very keen on chickens, so we just got chicks yesterday!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
A dozen
(3) What breeds do you have?
Rhode Island Reds
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We're new to this, but so far, we're enjoying just watching them learn to eat and drink... they're so cute, and it's even more soothing than watching an aquarium! We're raising them for eggs, so we're looking forward to great eggs from happy, well-treated chickens. I'm also looking forward to building tractors and a coop (any excuse to build something)!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, running, hiking, weaving, knitting, cooking & baking. Volunteer community radio funk, soul & jazz dj; you can listen to my show, UpFront Soul, here: https://exchange.prx.org/series/34301-upfront-soul-with-sanguine-fromage
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Potter by trade, on extended leave to raise my two kids and care for my mom (who recently passed...she grew up with chickens and especially loved banty hens). I may be a printmaker in my next act. Happily married; devoted human to our Puerto Rican rescue dog.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I was searching for information on building brooders. I just found BYC a couple of weeks ago. I'm looking forward to learning and hope to someday pass along information to other new chicken enthusiasts (when I learn enough to be helpful).
