so frustrated!

wait... your Ethics prof is acting unEthically? grading you down because you're counter to the university's sponsored political views?
this is one of the things that makes me *nuts* about college education.

don't have a lot of suggestions for you here, as I don't have a lot of confidence in the way the system works (tenure, et.al.)

all I can suggest is:
request a one-on-one to discuss why your paper isn't "A" quality work and what it would take for it to be
request a copy of an "A" quality paper for reference
meet with the department chair
file a complaint

hope one of those things works, but if your viewpoint gets up their nose, I don't hold out a lot of hope for getting a square deal.

somehow it seems ethics professors should be held to a higher standard <sigh>

but I am used to writing 20+ page research papers so this measly 1.5 page paper should be a breeze

Actually the short ones can be MUCH harder to write, IMO, and THAT may be your real problem--not having the luxury of lots of time to make your case. The short length requires you to tighten your style and make every single word work.

Just a thought....

She doesn't show us the actual grades of each individual, there is an average and the median. There are no other papers left only some discussions, but it's not worth it for me to cause a big fuss about it, I was just frustrated because she seems to grade so critically that I would be surprised if anyone makes an A. My GPA will survive if I make a B, it's just disappointing because I put a lot of work into it.

My son has a few liberal teachers at the college he attends and he has learned to write what his teachers want to hear and agree with their philosophy in theory and he gets good grades. Math is never an issue just the human behavioral related classes.

OK. Rewrite the paper and make it about something bland that you believe in and you are unlikely to get argument about. The ethics concerning cruelty to animals. Why children shouldn't be left to go hungry. Everyone is responsible for reducing their own petroleum usage. Something like that where you can be passionate but probably not going to spark a lot of disagreement.

If the TA is a socialist, you want to stay away from anything to do with economics.

It's good practice for you to learn to argue both sides of an issue. Surely, there is something where you can see both sides and don't get hostile about the opposite side of the issue. Figure out which side a socialist would be on and there you go.

I do suggest that you not put your name on anything that could possible come back and bite you on the butt in a different setting. Things do have a way of turning up later to cause problems.

You know you are top notch, and perhaps she know it too hence the B.It is her only sense of power-those grades. I would let it go and get through the class. You move on and she remains where she is at dishing out her unethical grades.File a complaint once you are out of the class.

I'd have her explain exactly what is wrong with the paper, then rewrite it and see if you can fix the mistakes. Did youw rite it on the computer and save it so that you can make minor changes? I had a professor in some ethics class in college and he was a pastor. I butted heads with that man every single class because of his skewed idea of how the world is and how we should perceive it. After I got an A- on my first essay I kept bugging him about what is wrong, where I need to improve my writing, etc. Then I resubmitted, got my A and one on each essay afterwards. I think he got tired of dealing with me.

I, too, was a non-traditional student. Some profs went easy on me because they knew I was working full-time and going to school full-time, but others held me to higher expectations or at least to the same standards they held all students. Your Ethics prof may be trying to get the best from you and is holding you to the same standard as the others. If you were the only one getting a B while the rest received A's, then you may have a case for bias. Ask for the paper with her comments and markups to see what style she is expecting and work to make your next essays match that style. Good luck with your schooling; I know how hard it is later in life.

ok well. After thinking about it may try to go ahead and rewrite it. She sent me a reply with an attachment saying roughly what I needed to add to the paper. I guess it all comes down to whether or not I'm motivated enough, but she gave me until the end of the semester to turn it in (3 weeks away). I should find time to rewrite it by then.

This course is writing intensive and I'm ready for it to be over!

Yup, you got to play their silly little games unfortunately. At least it’s almost over. But depending on which field you picked be prepared that you may have to endure her again. Just keep taking the high road and hang in there.
