So how is Zane doing?

Hi Cyn sorry that this is starting all over again. I am not sure I can help but a friend of mine had a sore that went bad a small hole the size of a that ended up growing into a hole the size of a grape fruit. The doc's finally had someone come in from home health and they packed it every day with medicated gause and everyday pulled that gause out and flushed the wound. They healed it from the inside out. I am not sure if that is possiable with a chicken or any other animal but maybe it would be worth checking into. I know that they soaked the gause in salen soultion and then just packed it in then slowly pulled it out the next day, you would not believe the gunk that comes out of a wound. This may not help but thought I wouldl mention it.

Prayers for you and yours

Please excuse the spelling mistakes I am in just too much pain to look words up and I am the worse speller.

something else to consider:
"All antibiotics in birds have potential toxic side effects, and most will have adverse effects on normal alimentary tract flora to some degree, rendering the birds susceptible to colonization by yeast and other potential pathogens. Perform frequent fecal gram stain on patients receiving antibiotic therapy to monitor enteric floral shifts. An attempt may be made to repopulate the gut with normal gram positive organisms. Commercial products containing live Lactobacilli are often used for up to 3 weeks following cessation of antibiotic therapy. They are not the same species of indigenous Lactobacilli and will not colonize the intestines, but they may help to lower the pH of the intestinal tract, allowing normal flora to recolonize. Nystatin is often given in conjunction with antibiotics to control yeast infections. Barbara L. Oglesbee, DVM, Dip ABVP - 114th OH VMA Conference Proceedings

Please read the following and ensure zane has the vitE/selenium combination (this becomes readily deficient in birds as when it is added to the feed it is in miniscules and barely minimum amount) Agway and walmart sometimes carry it (the combo) you just need to ensure that the selenium content does not exceed 50 MICROgrams. It is retained in the system so do not give it daily. I would give three times every other day then once a week twice and that should be sufficient.

(Toxicological Data on Colouring Agents for Medicinal Products:E 174 Silver)
"Antioxidant deficiencies (e.g., vitamin E, selenium) appear to enhance silvertoxicity. Some investigators have hypothesized that this effect is related to silver’s ability to reduce the intracellular content of selenium, with consequent inhibition of
glutathione peroxidase synthesis, which is selenium-dependent (Bunyan et al, 1968; Wagner et al., 1975). As a corollary to their hypothesis, Bunyan et al (1975) also demonstrated that supplemental vitamin E and selenium in the diets of rats and chickens increases the animals’ tolerance of even high doses of silver. Silver also
decreases the activity of superoxide dismutase (an effect that might explain the metal’s embryotoxicity) (Shavlovski et al., 1995) and alcohol dehydrogenase (Petering, 1976)....."

Jean, you described a wet to dry dressing, which I used with a bad case of bumblefoot, so I know exactly how to do it. We'd have to make a larger incision to get gauze in, but that may be what we have to do.
Diana, I always give them yogurt when they are on antibiotics. I really, really hate giving them, though. Sometimes, I guess there's no choice. Do you happen to know if AviaCharge has vitamin E and Selenium? I have AviaCharge, but not the jar it came in. Maybe I can find the list of ingredients online. Good to know about the silver.

I'll try to find the Vitamin E w/selenium when I go to the store again. I live too far away with the price of gas to just pop in the car. Usually, I like living way out, but when I need something NOW, it's not very convenient.

Watching this post closely and hope Zane will come out of it!

If you have other brothers with him, I would take the brothers out for temporary time until Zane can fight on his own. I would imagine it would stress him out more.

Hope better news of his leg when you do get the stuff you need.

How many Barred Rocks do you plan on for Zane next year if everything goes well?

Robin, Zane isn't with anyone at all. Even the hens would probably beat up on him. He stays in a wire dog kennel on top of the broody pen in Suede's coop then I carry him out to the separation pen, which is next to the current nursery coop's pen with all the 13 week old youngsters. Currently, including two half sisters of Zane's in the nursery, I have 10 Barred Rock girls total. The Barred Rocks run with the mixed laying flock, so actually, he and his two brothers will have about 35-40 girls between them.

Sending hugs to you and Zaner!
