So, how many of you live in urban settings?

I live in an urban area- in a city of 15000. My neighbours think our chickens are GREAT and I always have the neibourhood kids in my backyard! I did check with my next-door neighbours before I got the chickens to make sure they were not going to object.

They thought it was great! I was also worried about the dogs (everyone seems to have one!). So far even the British hunting dog next door has not been concerned about them.

rural on it's way to urban.

our neighbor's don't mind the 4 hens so far ...

i'm tired of moving away from urban sprawl. i used to live in a little town called Uncasville, some of you may have heard of it ...

Smack dab in the city...in a 80'x120' lot, corner lot and neighbors behind me likes chickens (he was from the south) and neighbor beside me used to live on the farm but recently he called th city guy on me for smelly compost which it wasnt. It was the foul smell coming off the bottom of the pool when we took it down, all those rotted grass, UGH! So he confused it with the smell coming from the compost pile. Next plan is to put up a privacy fence! City guy was really nice and said I was within reason having chickens in the city and the coop and run was clean.

Too bad I can not use my compost pile anymore, so from now on, I will have to bag up the waste and bedding to the garbage man. What a waste!

I live right in the middle of Central Phoenix. There are a couple of people in the neighborhood with chickens, and the law states that if your lot is less than 10,000 square feet (most lots here are around 8,000 I think) then you can have up to 5 hens (no roosters!) with your neighbor's permission.
I love being in an urban area with chickens, it's the best of both worlds!

Also Ewesheep- a lot of cities have a program that recycles old plastic dumspters by drilling some holes in them and offering them for compost receptacles, if you could do this, you could have your compost pile back, your neighbor would never know!

I'm so jealous of all you rural folks! I live in a nice suburban neighborhood of the largest city in the US. Fortunately, I have a decent sized yard (for Los Angeles, anyway) and enough room for just a few chicks. The only requirements here are that the coop be kept 35 feet from the neighbor's dwelling, and I just happen to have a shady spot that meets that. Oh, and no roosters of course!

The neighbors don't know about the chickens yet, if they say anything I'll give them some eggs. They are pretty laid back though and I can't imagine them complaining. Certainly they are a lot quieter than my German Shorthair Pointer!
