So, how much kitchen waste can they handle?

"So, how much kitchen waste can they handle?"

All of it. If there are leftovers--------you need more chickens.

I agree with Carolyn. I provide a daily ration of layer pellets for my hens because they're penned and a basket of kitchen left-over every evening in addition to a few handfuls of weeds to entertain themselves with. They fight over it and it's gone in minutes. I know a lot of people around here who feed their hens nothing but kitchen scraps and free-ranging.

They're health and they're eggs don't suffer for it at all. They're natural scavengers. But there isn't a whole lot of bread and hot dogs laying around in nature, so I try to keep that in mind. It's interesting how my awareness of what I'm willing to put in the chickens scrap basket has heightened my awareness of what I feed my family.

Sounds like you've hit the jackpot!

It made me really think.. I do not feed "junk food" to my chickens... In turn we avoid many more "junky" foods ourselves..
If it is not good enough for the chickens it is not good enough for our family... Our new motto...
