so i finally tried feeding some raw meat...

That's what I thought... thank you so much for your input.

I have been feeding my dogs a raw diet for years (much to the dismay of un-informed people who think this is dangerous... LOL) as I do believe that feeding animals what they are designed to eat in the wild is the way to go.

Now I know more about chickens and can breathe a sigh of relief and feed them what I feel is natural without compromising their health.

Of course raw meat is an occasional treat and they do get the standard layer feed as the base of their diet, just because it's easier and I'm a novice...

I have a question for technodoll. You said you feed your dogs raw meat. Does that mean you make your own dog food at home?

rstampa, yes i do... you can PM me if you want info on this? i don't want to get kicked off the thread for hijacking LOL

Well I'm not Technodoll but I said it too.

When I say that I "raw feed" my dog I mean what they call "prey model raw feeding" which you can google.
It means that I buy a package of chicken legs and give my dog two of them raw every night (just an example)

prey model means that the food is "whole" or as whole as we can get = bones/muscle/organs and not ground up like the "barf diet"

I just want to say I'm appalled. I did have a bird get a dead frog my wife hit with the lawnmower but I would not encourage meat eating by my birds unless I wanted to find a coop full of dead birds.
Feeding chickens meat and yuk just cause they eat it is like feeding your dog cat poop or other dogs poop just cause they'll eat it and they will.
Not only are you what you eat but you are what they eat. Which is why people want organic food.
By the way there are many plants that have protein.

Chickens are not herbivores, not by a long shot.

I know I read on here about the person who's chickens devoured a leftover deer carcas that someone left on their property.

Lots of people's chickens eat raw meat of various forms, whether they feed it or the chickens catch it, or FIND it scavenger-style.

Like I said you are what your chickens eat. I am aware that they aren't herbivores, I just think some things they "will" eat is unhealthy for them and me.

Have you ever seen a vulture or buzzard die from eating meat that is "full of bacteria". How about a raccoon, possum or skunk? All these animals were designed by God to eat this way.

I know now your saying that those are all wild animals and our chickens are domesticated and used to only eating grain. That's a good argument but what about our beloved pet (read domesticated) dogs that decide to make a midnight raid on the neighborhood trash cans. Never seen one die from that either and you can bet they get all kind of "Goodies" (all bacteria free I'm sure) out of the trash can buffet.

Don't condemn or belittle people because you don't agree with something. State your opinion and why you feel that way and leave it at that.

Are you familiar with "Mad Cow"? It came about because of what they were feeding cows. The disease was transferred to humans. They were feeding cows animal by products that included the brain. Feeding cattle animal by products is now banned as is the import of foreign cattle and beef.

I believe cattle are true herbivores though, their stomach is not designed to deal with meat of any kind.
THAT is the difference.

I would also ask if you have heard of WAPF, raw eating, and similar ways of thinking. There are those who believe that US HUMANS should eat raw meat. (edited by staff)

LOL our first time we set out the leftover leg from our Easter Lamb and they went absolutely mental! ... Actually, the bone is still in there and every now and then they have a big fit over the scraped clean bone teehee. Chickens are omnivores as are dogs and CATS. They scavenge and are actually omnivores if there is a need. My cat adores vegetables as much if not more than meat. My dog loves salad. My chickens love meat. Cows are true herbivores, and the issue was with SHEEP BRAINS and a certain bacteria in those brains that caused Mad Cow.
