So I only paid $10 a dozen, but what are they??

Meepbeep, I asked myself that too! And him! He said it's just a hobby and he likes to share. He has pictures of him holding cemani rooster and chicks, Also photos of him with turkens. And I did get really nice Turken, but it failed to hatch.

Donrae, thanks! I wil post pics of andalusians tomorrow. As far as the red one goes, I think it's an Ameracauna mixed with a RIR . I might have forgot to post RIR in his listing?

But why get purebred name brand ( lol) chickens if you're just gonna mix them up???

Because if you have several breeds having individual breeding pens to pair them up and/or keep the hens from the roosters and mixing is a lot of work... Especially if it's just a hobby...

Right now since breeding season is over all my birds are in the communal coop, it's simply easier to maintain one water station and one feed station... Come late winter I will move the hens that I want to breed into isolation pens and then after they 'clean' out for 30+ days I will introduce the roosters I want them to breed with... But, with all those isolation pens I know have all lot more feed and water stations as well a a lot more maintenance cleaning out each pen...

Can't say what this guy is doing, maybe he is unaware that the hens can retain sperm for 30 days and he is simply grabbing a hen a hen and rooster from general population and is tossing them in a cage together and immediately collection eggs assuming those eggs are all fertilized by the rooster in the pen with her...

Honestly though at $10/dozen delivered I suspect the guy isn't doing much at all beyond collecting eggs from a communal pen, hobby or not it simply doesn't make much sense to sell eggs you can get $5, $10 or $20+ a pop for easily on Craigslist into a bottom of the barrel $10/dozen delivered deal for hatching...

In the end as long as barnyard mixes don't bother you, you should get a nice variety of egg colors out of the mix...
