So I'm browsing Drudge Report...

That is certainly the easy explanation. It's the explanation that the people with all the money would like for us to believe. Back in the 1900's people with a lot of money tended to earn it by manufacturing and selling things. They employed people, they invested in their businesses and the whole country prospered. It's how America became great.

Now a large portion of those top earners have made their money through selling paper with nothing on it. The country was doing great until the government deregulated the financial and mortgage markets. 30 year mortgages have been the norm for at least the past 50 years. When I was in my 20's, it was just about impossible to get credit of any kind unless you didn't need it. Now they send credit cards to kids in college that have no jobs. It's easy to step back and criticize those people that don't pay as they go. It's human nature to want instant gratification. Granted it is a bad aspect of human nature but it's there anyway.

Life really is a lot like a game of Monopoly. Some people land on Boardwalk before it has been purchased and reap the profits. Other people land on Baltic Ave. Ronny should have left well enough alone.

Boyd and I went squirrel hunting on the moon last week. We didn't get any squirrels and the radiation poisoning seems to be subsiding.

In my opinion NASA, along with European, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese agencies will build a moon base sometime in the next 50 years.

With global warming happening exactly as predicted it's only a matter of time before humanity needs to leave this lush paradise we call Earth and venture out into the cold and deadly realms of space. Heck, I'd love to go to the moon. I've been worse places.

Don't think NASA will be too involved except in a consulting and testing mode. I do see that happening though. They may discover something that needs to be made in the lighter gravity on the moon and it would be mass produced and sent back to Earth. Or they may find a rare and valuable mineral and start mining it.

Man will find ways to compensate for global warming. They'll build something above or underground to continue existence of the wealthiest and the brightest. Everyone else will adapt or die.

I don't see us doing much more unless we develop a much better form of propulsion. That would have to come from corporations. The government couldn't afford it.

I won't go too in-depth, but AGW is not happening "as predicted." The current rate is what the Goracle (Or was it Captain NASA Nutjob Hansen?) said would only happen with dramatic emissions cuts.

All of Antarctica except the Peninsula is actually getting colder, and the Southern Hemisphere generally are showing a net cooling trend.

BTW, have you seen where some of these temperature measuring stations are placed? Some of these things are planted right next to airport tarmacs or in cities!

I doubt NASA will be building a moon base anytime soon, mostly due to the fact that our government is pretty much screwed.

China or Japan, though, seem within reason. Hopefully, though, the corporations will beat them to it. They'd have money flowing in from all kinds of people - scientists, wealthy thrill-seekers, and others, and who knows? Maybe discover some valuable resource to mine.

Interesting thing - it would cost more to combat global warming -assuming the Goracle's predictions are accurate - than it would to simply adapt, that is, prevention would be more expensive than recovery.

Of course, The Goracle's predictions are crazily high - even the IPCC only thinks 20 inches or so of sea level rise. Going with the flow would be MUCH cheaper.

Even at that, I think the IPCC overestimates the damage of warming and underestimates the benefits. North Dakotans and Russians sure ain't scared of a little warming.

I wouldn't mind being moved to Zone 8, either.

I have WHAT in my yard? :

You guys are so funny.

You argue like old people in a retirement home. Have you ever listened to an argument in a retirement home?? Hysterical. If you listen carefully and makes a few cognitive leaps you can get the idea of what the other person means, you just have to fill in alot of blanks! Nonsequitors abound! I love nonsequitors, to me its like a verbal game of connect the dots!

Dunkopf I can give you better articles than that. I can give you flat statistics on the income disparity as well as over two hundred years of data showing that severe income disparity almost always precedes a major collapse. Either the society has a revolution, or it is invaded or it fragments. The only other alternative is for there to be a massive seismic shift that brings incomes closer together again. This rarely happen without massive social upheaval.

I can see that this is connected directly to the space programs. Space is no longer the purview of most nations, too expensive with not enough payback. So private companies will do it. But, this will cause problems down the road. If you re a massive multi-national corporation who owes it fealties to no one (maybe your shareholders but that is questionable) then you can do whatever you like to follow the business maxim: maximize profits. Can you picture the moon carved with a Nike swoosh?? Or how about using it as a base for a for profit mercenaries?? Think Xe....

There are lots of sci fi novels which give creepy yet highly plausible scenarios of what could happen if the moon gets colonized by for profits. And just as many for if it gets held by any one country. There is an international treaty in place already to prevent that.

YES! You get it! You get it! You really get it. I feel like Sally Field.

My sister and I were discussing income inequality last week or so. I was on my soapbox. I thought the NYT article was a good summary. Easy to understand. And yeah it does tie into space exploration if you think about just a little. Funding is fun and fundamental.

Listen, global warming is happening. I saw it on CNN ok. They gave it a change of clothes and now call it climate change. Every day the weather here changes so climate change must be happening.

As for the moonbase we can do it right now with existing technologies but the public, media, and budgets won't support it. That's too bad as the technologies that would be discovered along the way would be amazing. I suppose "expanding the depth of human capabilities and science" just isn't a good enough reason. Heck, we went to the moon mostly as a race to beat the Russians (if you believe we went to the moon, not a movie set). A president with the leadership abilities to rally the country could, in theory, motivate the country to go to the moon, thereby stimulating and creating new micro economies within our own shores. Reagan and Kennedy are both dead and I don't know of any other politicians up to the challenge.

Can you see Obama telling us we can go to the moon? Most of us want him to go to the moon.

In response to "our gov being screwed" I'll say again have a little faith. Sometimes things have to get bad before they can get good again.

Remember, in the event of a major upheaval it's usually the people with all the books and big words that end up in the village soup pot. Yummmmm.
