I have started supplamenting my duck and goose food with vegitable scraps from my saturday farmer's market; I just go and ask the vendors if i can have some of their scraps and I load up on the dmaged outer lettuce leaves, half squished strawberries, loose grapes and ripped up cabbage... I pack the greens into plastic bags with a bit of water to keep things crisp and toss it in the bottom of the frige... then portion it out all week. This could at least offset some of the year for you...

I travel about 30 miles to a feed mill. I go once a month and get enough for the month.

At the local feed stores layer is about $13 for 50# (crumbles).
At the feed mill layer is $15 for 80#(mash).
And it is fresher! The oldest I've ever gotten was 1 week old.

Search feed mill or grain mill.

If you talk to the produce manager at your local grocery store, you might be able to get their scraps & bruised fruit and vegys. How about your grass clippings (only if they are not treated)? Or your neighbors? Do you have a small restaurant you frequent? Ask them, maybe 1 day a week to save all the plate scrapings for you, but be sure you pick them up as scheduled.

I just saw somewhere that it cost this person $1.48/# to raise their meaties. How much do you pay for chicken at the grocery? That is a savings off your food bill. Same with eggs.

OK, I'm done thinking for now.

Good luck!
