Mom is a Cayuga which I thought was Fair-Good mothering according to Storey's book.

Willy is trying to use his/her wings to pull up and balance on the fabric roll I put in front of the food for her to lean on. I also made a little donut at the vet's suggestion to place her in but she doesn't seem very happy in there and actually managed to climb out and get wedged behind the water. So I'm going to try to come up with something new today.

I'm happy to see she's getting in trouble like ducklings do LOL Never thought I would say that. She was also grooming herself yesterday!!

My only concerns are the good foot, looks to be a little turned in but maybe it's looking funny because she keeps rolling back to sit on her bottom. The splint on her leg has to weigh more than she does and I think she's not eating much at night because she can't get around. I come out in the morning and she's peeping and opening her mouth to tell me she's hungry. I think I need to find a friend or two for her this year so she's not going out to face that big meanie of a mother by herself. Hard finding ducklings this time of year around here.

Ah well, one day at a time, I can't believe she came this far.

Thanks again, it's nice to know I'm not too crazy for taking her to the vet.

My lil duckling had a simular experience, I found it hatched and mama trying to kill it, so I took it from mama and placed it under one of my broody hens who wasn't sitting on anything, came back a little later to find it had been pecked more and left to die, so my dh and I set up a brooder box asap and the little one has made it to 2 months old and is doing great, she or he is a house duck, it goes out and spends time around the other ducks, chickens and goose but mostly thinks it's a puppy since our dogs are inside too. so they can come through alot and I know with TLC yours will too. BTW there was one more egg in the nest and it had pipped but died so this was a single hatch too. Hope you can find yours some friends. but it will probably be fine if you can't.

Oh my goodness!! What kind of duck was it that did that? I feel bad leaving it alone, I really want to find it a friend. I can't have a house duck LOL

Do yours come in at night? Where does it stay? I'm up late every night to make sure it has food and water just before I go to bed and then I'm up at 6 making sure it's having some again. Little stinker, I think it likes the attention and waits for me to sprinkle some food into the water and then he eats LOL

I think I kicked mine outside around a month old and they are by no means a house duck. Even though the first month they spent alot of time indoors and in my spare bathtub LOL. If you dont allow a hard imprint (which might be a little hard with the leg problem) then you should be fine. Just make sure she is healing well and dont stress about it.
