its only popped out a bit compared to what it looked like yesterday but still its dry...is there anything i can do for her other than put her to sleep?

Prep H cream is really the best treatment. I have had a lot of good results with it. Some times it will take a few days for it to stop popping out depending on how bad the prolapse is. I would keep her separated and give her a break from layer feed so she has time to heal. Good Luck.

prep H or honey will keep the area moist and reduce the swelling so it will stay in better. also you have to stop her from laying for a week or longer so she can heal up inside, to do this, keep her in a dark area to prevent egg production, limit exposure to light for the week anyway. Hope she does well, she is pretty, the poor girl.

Excellent info I will keep in mind for the "just in case" with chickens! Thanks for sharing!

I don't think her outlook is too promising at this point. You won't be able to stop her from laying eggs on a permanent basis and this prolapse will keep reoccuring. You can't feel an egg stuck up inside her when you push the prolapse back in can you? If she is straining to pass an egg that could be the underlying cause of the prolapse and would need to be dealt with asap. Some animals are just prone to a prolapse and research shows that once it happens the likelihood of it happening again is very high. It can be hereditary and you would NOT want to keep any chicks from her. If she does manage to lay she will continue to prolapse. Eventually she is going to get an infection and probably die..... If it were me I'd cull her now before I got too attached.

Hi Spish, so sorry to read about your chicken! Don't give up! The Prep H really does work well, just keep gooping it on and pushing everything back in. Our Mathilda prolapsed last November and I kept her inside in our Great Dane's cage with a towel over it to keep it dark. I would spray a little spritz of Bactine on her protruding 'lady parts' after cleaning off the poop, then put a glob of preparation H on it and push it gently back in and hold it for a little while. Eventually it did stay in but it took a while, be patient. We kept her in for a few months since it was winter and put her back out in spring where she resumed laying like nothing ever happened. Good luck, Spish--we'll be keeping you in our thoughts!
