There was a shooting around the corner last afternoon. The owner of a pizza place was shot and killed by a would-be robber, right in front of his wife and kids. He was such a kind person! Ran that shop on his own, cooked the pizzas and did everything. Good food too.

We were driving home and the street was blocked by police cars. Found out why this morning. Tragic! The shooter is still out there somewhere.

Another shooting happened a couple of days ago a little bit farther at a gas station. But the pizza place, that's a 5 minute walk!

To make it worse, a 12 year old boy was killed by a train around the other corner on Friday, but they don't know why/how yet.

What in the world is going on? One of our neighbors wants to install security cameras and additional lighting between us, our driveways are next to each other, and he wants to light it up from both houses and network the cameras so we can access it too. I'm game, since our garage was broken into (not thoroughly locked, but it is now!) earlier this year.

What's strange, is everyone buying houses here are young families/couples similar to us. Where is all this crime coming from? Home sales are on an up tick, and by all appearances this is a normal, decent, neighborhood. The statistics are starting to show a different story.

I sleep with one ear listening for the dogs now, at least they know their job and they don't play games with strangers. Hopefully them and a new security display will be a deterrent. Those new LED bulbs in the fixtures sure light the place up. Homes aren't getting broken into near as I can tell, but thieves are definitely looking for opportunity. Doesn't take copper thieves long to empty out abandoned houses of their pipes and brass doorknobs.

I hope they catch the shooter soon. That's too close to home.

There are no safe neighborhoods anymore. There is just higher priced neighborhoods. The criminals have cars and can drive where ever they want to. Being that close to home should make you nervous. What a shame for that poor man and his family.

Security cameras will certainly be helpful to ID perps, but I doubt they will actually stop anyone. I don't think lights are much of a deterent either. At 3am what neighbor is looking at your lighted home in time to notice someone creeping around?

Dogs are useful.Ofcourse the determined theif will just kill the dog. Lots of crime happen during the day while pepole are out working. Not just career crims or drug users, but now you have bored teens looking for a rush.In all cases the penalties for them are lame.

God help you if you are home when they break in.Robbery too often leads to rape and murder once that door shuts. That is sad about the pizza guy.You know he would have given anything to not be shot. I read of so many pizza deliery guys around us being robbed at gun point.People can be so pathetic.

It's beyond crazy out there - all the gang shootings where they hit innocent bystanders instead of their intended targets. The police don't seem to put an dent into the crimes like that. They should at least give the gangbangers gun lessions on hitting their target and not everyone else. I'm not being funny I mean it. If the gang members would just take out each other it would be a blessing. A lot of innocent kids, moms, etc. wouldn't be dead instead.

As crazy as that sounds It would be good if they just killed each other.

I thought i must tell you of this incident that happened on Monday afternoon in the small market town near where I live in rural Lincolnshire UK. Two robbers, wearing motorcycle helmets and wielding a knife and hammer threatened a jewellery store owner and wanted him to empty his safe. Passers by, seeing what was happening kicked over the thieves get away bike and others blocked the shop doorway so they couldn't escape. The police praised the actions of the have-ago heroes, reminding them that it is always dangerous to tackle armed felons. One for the good guys I think!

If you are going to install lights, think about at least some motion detector ones... You notice when those lights go on, and people actually look to see what caused the light to go on. When all lights are already on, it's not as much of a deterrent. Saves energy and prevents "light pollution" too.

Sorry to hear about that Mandy. That is definitely too close to home for me. Makes me glad I am in a rural area, but we are not immune from it either.
Last week in Dayton, a pregnant woman was walking around her apartment complex trying to induce labor. She was scheduled to be induced the next morning. Someone shot at someone else and the bullet hit and killed her. Her baby boy was delivered by C-section and has had a rocky start, but he is doing better. Makes me cry just thinking about it.

They are saying now that the bullet that killed her was NOT from the gun that the other person fired.
