So the police came to my door yesterday....

You gave in over the rooster...I wouldn't back down the next time! Its time to draw the line!

Instead of getting into a never ending argument, why not throw a block party. Make sure to invite the person(s) that are making the complaints and let everyone get to know each other. Surprisingly, sometimes it just takes a little talking.

this is why I could never live in town....I'd get in soooo much truble

rules are rule, but hateful crosses the line that...some times needs crossing back

but try to better it, befor you try getting back. it mite stink, but it's right

I'm a bit worried about my roosters too. Long before we got chickens, I phoned the bylaw people. "Am I allowed chickens?" Yes. "What about roosters?" I don't know. I'll put you through to someone who might. No answer. Left message with my inquiry and my phone number. No response. So, we went ahead and kept roosters anyway. They are crowing, we have 10 roosters, 9 in a bachelor coop, one in with the hens. If people are going to complain, they'll probably start soon. I don't find them that loud. When I'm in the house, I can't even hear them. The house is probably about 20 feet from the run. The run is about 40 feet from the neighbor's fence, which is about another 40 feet from their house. As long as they can't hear the roosters while they are in their home, I can't see it being a problem.

Bylaw people's fault for ignoring my inquiry! Obviously it can't be that important to them.

It seems odd that one complaint makes it mandatory to get rid of the rooster. Does that mean that one complaint from the ninny would mean that somebody would have to rehome their dog?

these sound like some nosy busy body troublemaking neighbors i have here! we are currently going to court against them now. i agree with the posters who said confront them with a witness. a tape recorder is a good witness as well. the said neighbors of mine have been harrassing and stalking and attacking my 15 year old daughter for 2 years now. this last time i had had enough and stepped in and got my child out of harms way and got her in the house before she could be attacked again. needless to say the mother and step father kept running their mouths and actually came into my yard and attacked me from behind! so not only did their trouble maker daughter get whipped AGAIN by my daughter but mommy dearest got whipped too and is now charged with 2nd degree trespassing and assault and battery! ive had it with them. i refuse to drop the charges or let her plea bargain. i hope the judge charges the daughter too. this is the 3rd time that i know of she has started a fight with someone and got whipped!

That is something that has always gotten to me.

I like a quiet neighborhood, but no one exists in dead silence.

Common sense would dictate an investigation to determine if a complaint is LEGITIMATE before any action was taken. People who make unreasonable complaints should be told that they don't get to rule the world to suit their personal convenience.

A passel of roosters crowing all day and all night 6 feet from someone's window is a legitimate problem. One rooster crowing moderately during daylight hours at a reasonable distance is not a legitimate problem.

IMO, noise issues about barking dogs (BTW -- I dislike dogs in general and LOATHE a senseless barker -- as opposed to a dog that barks for good reason.*), crowing roosters, chainsaws, lawnmowers, power tools, music, etc. should be clearly defined with decibel levels for day and night. Complaints should be subject to decibel measurement to determine the action to be taken.

And if you CHOOSE to move in next to a working farm you have no right to complain about tractors at dawn, the odor of the manure, or the natural sounds of the animals.

*I am blessed with neighbors who also dislike senseless barking and who have <gasp> trained their dogs well. If we hear persistent barking we go investigate what the issue is because we know that there is an issue.
