I was starting to wonder if I owned a flock of non laying chickens.

They are 22 weeks old, and three had started squatting about a week ago. I went out into the coop to clean it today around noon today, and was literally shocked to find a little egg in the nest box!!
I believe it was from either one of my speckled sussex or my barred rock. I am SO excited!!

Didn't think I would get so excited about an egg!!

Just wait. Once they start to lay you will have more eggs than you know what to do with. Especially the first full year. My 2 rsl hens have only missed 2 days since October when I got them.

Yes very true. Ive been giving mine out to my relatives. And also making meals based around eggs. Deviled egg sandwich, egg salad, hard boiled eggs lol

Haha!! That is what I am a little worried about! I have 6 hens now (2 are cochins, so not sure how well those will lay), and plan on getting 5 more this spring. I hope my family and co workers like eggs!!

Also checking into preserving eggs using the mineral oil method!

The first egg really IS exciting, isn't it?
Our girls have only been laying for about two weeks, but it seems to be contagious, they are all getting in on the act now....and squabbling over the same nest box

Thats so cute its his job to collect the eyes. My 4 year old daughter loves doing it. My bantom cochin just started laying this week. Shes only had 2 so far. My isas lay pretty well.

Preserving them is a great idea :)
