so very upset

So sorry you are going through this. I have to keep my hens in a predator-safe enclosure during the day and locked in a henhouse at night. My guess if you are loosing them in the daytime it is a fox. Are there any in your territory? Good luck and check out the predator posts. They will be helpful.

Dear scottschick,

You have already gotten good advise on moving this to the Preditor section,.. here's the link,..https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=13

You will need to give more information on your situation so others can help,.. the area in which you live,. the type and build of coop/run you have and any of the clues left behind by the predator.
You have lost a lot of chickens and could benefit greatly from the advise of the good people here on BYC,..
don't give up,.. it's frustrating and sad to suffer these losses,.. but you can change that and settle down to really enjoy your flock,..

Aside from not knowing what your housing is like, you need to understand that roosters are really no protection at all. At best they will fight the predator but they will most likely lose -- all you can hope for is they sound the alarm when a predator shows up and you're around to scare it off. They are a chicken first, and then one with spurs and a fighting attitude second. Roosters are taken by predators all the time.

Welcome to BYC! Hopefully through past threads and the advice given on this one, you will construct a predator proof coop and run to protect your remaining birds...those roosters too.

thank you! i will definitely move it to that section ! yes there are foxes all around us we have seen at least 6 within a two mile radius and i dont know if it legal to trap them or shoot them ! i bought goats to help keep them away but that is not working either

You're doing fine scottschick. A lot of us posted a subject in the Introductions the first time (me included), partly because we join the forum when under stress. It sounds like you have a fox problem but wonder how they are getting through your fence. We put hardware wire the first 3 feet up from the ground and also buried it 18". It has discouraged predators. I've seen a fox stand beside the run and look in at the chickens. No, I wasn't close enough to see him drool but I'm sure he did. You'll feel better when you identify the critter. Then find out what you can do in your area to get rid of it. Good luck!

I gree with the last poster, sounds like racoons. They re smart little critters dn they decimated my chickens twice. I had carefully sewed all the overlapping chicken wire because they slid in between the layers on the roof! I hate to be murderous...but on the second round three racoons started going in and just killing. Sometimes they'd drag the bodies out and sometimes not. I convinced two of them that my chicken coop was abaaad place to be. The third wouldn't take a hint. His tail is hanging from the pen wire roof as a warning.
