So we are probably getting a hurricane what to do

I would definitely lock them in...They are pretty light...a decent wind gust could take them away!! We are about an hour from the coast of NC...mine will be inside...still! Actually, they haven't been out yet. We are still building thier coop and run so it's just as well! I am praying this isn't as bad as they are saying it will be! I am praying for everyone in the path!

After having experienced the earthquake on Tuesday I've decided that I'll just lock my Leghorns in the outside coop until the hurricane winds and rain have passed - the flock in the house brooder will have to be on their own if anything happens. We're on the coast of northern VA - probably won't get much more then alot of rain and strong wind gusts. Praying that the coop and chicks will be fine as we have no basement or garage to store them in should Irene come closer. They handled the earthquake just fine and we've had a few heavy storms come through recently - so I'm praying that they'll weather this just fine as well. Glad we're not at the beach this week.

My son is an hour away from you in Wilmingon. He says they're not calling for an evacuation of the area and has a "not a problem" attitude about the whole thing. I hope this storm stays off the coast! On the lighter side. . . yay! an excuse to bring the chickens in the house!!

My poor girls are so rattled still from the quake that noone's laying and they're still acting nervous. If Irene doesn't get blown east I'm just gunna bring them in. Hubby will just have to deal with it for a little while. I'm sure the kids will be ecstatic!

I live in the middle of florida so I don't expect anything more than alot of rain and wind but.......If it does get bad since I live in a manufactured home and my barn is new florida pole barn.....I'm moving in with the chickens.

I was in one once. Roofs peeled off. trees went down. huge things blew around like paper. It was like being under a lawnmower. smelled like it too from all the chopped vegetation. Most coops would simply have vanished And I am glad I did not have chickens then. BRING THEM IN. get pet carriers or cages and bring them in with you. Too many? What about trailer tiedowns for coops?

We just got a bunch of rain not too long ago and I keep running out to check on the big kids. The babies are in the brooder in the house though. I plan on bringing the big kids in if it gets icky though!!

My husband and I were wondering the same thing. We live on Long Island and we are not looking forward to this hurricane coming. We were going to leave them locked in their coop and pray for them. No garage, no basement and an all glass sunroom. Bringing them in the house it not an option because of my 3 dogs and 3 cats. I would lock them in the bathroom but we only have 1. They live in a tractor but my husband built it so strong and heavy it ended up becoming permanent due to the weight. It is 6 feet tall and the coop is up top so I don't think flooding would be a problem for them. Like I said, all we can do is pray.
