So what do you do with a stray chicken? advice?

OMG.. She is so pretty... Definitely a keeper! I had a stray show up last fall. I put her in tiny coop away from the others for 38days, then put her in w/ a divider between them. She stayed there two days and found a way to get w/ the other chickens.... She was a beautiful girl, feisty and didn"t let them pick on her!

OEG? but that is just a guess.

Keep her in QT for 30 days and then if you like her and are worried, stick a "disposable" with her (someone who if they die, will not break you heart in a million pieces, like if the whole flock got sick and passed) and let them go for another 30 or 48 days - see how the disposable does. If all is well, then I might add her to the flock.

Have only had strays show up here once - they were cockerels/roos - not very friendly but very tasty.

Wow she is beautiful. Lucky you. Looks healthy and in good shape. I wish a stray like her would turn up in my yard. Maybe she ran away from home or flew the coop and couldn't remember her way back.

Ugggh. I haven't really decided what I am going to do with her. But now I feel a personal responsibility for her

I just don't think I'm willing to risk the health of my flock. It took me such a long time to find my birds and I really don't have anything disposable to throw in with her. Guess I will just observe her over next couple days and see how I feel. Can't just let her back out though. She's been hanging around my coop and my dogs will make a meal out of her if the hawks don't get her first, or she'll spread something to them if she IS sick. And how would I go about re-homing her when I know nothing about her? Looks like we are stuck with her for at least 30 days either way. And by then-you all know what that means...she will have a name. The rest is history.

Precious is what she is! Sorry, I am also an enabler but I totally understand your not wanting to mess up your good thing. I am president of the No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Club. That said, who said second coop and another flock? Teeny tiny coops are inexpensive! You could get her one or two teeny tiny friends! Just a thought. In any case, you are so good to care enough to catch her and take care of her. Good luck!

I just looked her over again and she actually DOES have mites. How do I treat for that? Sevin dust? Is there any type of withdrawal time for that with eggs? Is there a safer product than Sevin?

I have two female and one male duckwing bantams, and the females look identical to your stranger. They are almost tame and follow us around the yard!! I know this is a late post, but I stumbled on this thread b/c we woke up this AM to FOUR new Roos that were apparently dumped off overnight!!!!
