So what do you think of these silkies? [Lots of pics]

We are occasionally in the Phx area visiting family. I'd like started birds from you one of these days, if that was ever possible...

i purchased eggs from Hattrick and they were kind enough to send a full dozen extra. Very kind of Janet, and quite a bargain. i only hatched out five, due to my own incubator issues. They are really pretty birds, though not all are show quality, four out of five were, not that i am an expert.

You can see the standards here on the American Silkie Bantam Club site: http://www.americansilkiebantamclub.com/standard.asp

But
if you are breeding just for your own pleasure and maybe to sell some hatching eggs, i think you are fine. My first silkies i hatched from eggs purchased on ebay. i got a bit of a motley crew, but i love them dearly. Some were medium quality, some were poor, but i was honestly happy with them all. Your birds are far and away better than my first batch.

From the little bit i know, on your birds, the backs need to be shorter and tail fuller and taller, crests bigger. Look at Sonoran Silikes avatar, that's what a show quality silkie should look like.

Think of this as an adventure. Silkies are like yummy chocolates, you can't have just one. They are all beautiful and special and steal their way into your heart. i would be happy to send you hatching eggs once my Hattrick silkie kids get big enough, just remind me with a pm. We're a couple months away from egg laying at this point. i have four whites and a partridge.

Hope you are happy with your birds. They really are beautiful.

I am truly happy with my birds. I think they're beautiful. I don't plan on raising partridges, but I couldn't bear to part with Mrs. Party. She's absolutely darling and sweet. I really love her. And Leroy is gorgeous to me, and at 4mos old is quite a sweet boy. I hope that continues LOL.

I do, however, need to learn the standards and work toward the best birds I can get. I'm wanting b/b/s, as I've fallen in love with the colors in my bantam cochins. I think splash is the cutest thing I've ever seen, and I really think that's what I want to raise in my future silkie flock. If Leroy's not up to the standard that I'm looking for, he'll just stick around as a pet and be Mrs. Party's husband

Thanks, Enchanted Sunrise Farms, for the kind offer of eggs in the future. I'm sure your birds are going to be beautiful, but they're not the colors I'm looking for. I'll figure out a way to get what I want one of these days....

Have a great day, everyone!

Let us re-evaluate him in a couple or three months--at 4 months old he is a long way from having finished developing his type--it could improve dramatically.

If you get up towards Albuquerque, check and see if George ([email protected]) has youngsters available--he may or may not, but when he has extras he will sometimes sell at good prices.

I almost always have folks wanting silkies as broodies, so even if you don't breed Mrs Party, she can still be an asset to your flock. I too found the photo of her leaning on him really cute.

Let me know when you'll be in Phoenix--hope I'll have something available for you.

Kids usually have lots of fun at the poultry shows.
