So what's a Golden 300 hybrid duck made of anyway?

I have Harlequins, one Cayuga female, and one domestic mallard female. So far the mallard has put them to shame. Her eggs are huge and she's only missed maybe three days since she started in mid-November. I can't imagine she'll keep it up too long, but who knows? The Harlequin eggs range from medium to maybe XL. But Noodles the mallard is always jumbo. The Cayuga laid about 20 large eggs and has been on break for over a week. The Harlequins are fairly dependable, but there's the size thing. Oh well, they're all still pretty young, so we'll see. I can't wait to cross Noodles with a Harlequin this spring.

I have three of these ducks from Metzers. I got them Spring 2002 and they are still doing well healthwise. 2009 was their seventh spring but they didn't lay any quality eggs at all the past year. The first 3 years they laid (almost non stop year round) excellent quality eggs. Around the 4th spring their shells started becoming very thin and I'd often find shelless eggs and the quality continued to deteriorate to what it is today - which is pretty much non existent.

Originally, I got them for the eggs which I decorate/sell but very quickly they became favored pets. Their personalities are great and they are pretty vocal about things but not as bad as roosters

(of which I have two!). They are quite comfortable being around me as long as I don't try to "touch" them. They will eat right out of my hands and even come running out of the woods when I call them but are almost impossible to pick up. I rarely try to pick them up anyway (with the exception of checking out a possible injury) so it's not a problem for me.

I sometimes sit out in their yard to observe their activities and eventually, they come and sit at my feet if I wait long enough. We can sit together peacefully for quite some time as long as I don't mess it up by trying to "touch" them

I have one khaki campbell that I got from feed store so I can't really say much for comparison. All my ducks are pretty skittish and the only personality I can see in them is stay with the other ducks and keep away from me. My Golden hybrids are only about 10 weeks old, so I don't know how they will lay just yet. I am pretty sure they are drop shipped from Metzer no matter which hatchery you buy them from. It's pretty obvious too since Metzer has the lowest price on them and they need a good duck egg layer for their duck egg and balut sales. I took a few pics of mine so people can see what they look like.

I agree, it is pretty obvious. I think they drop-ship for several other hatcheries considering several use the exact same pictures, have the same breeds/colors, and the same availability. Either Metzer's drop ship for them (which of course, there is nothing wrong with as far as I am concerned) or several other duck dealers blatantly plagiarize them. LOL

I have both, but they're ducklings still so I can't tell you much about the laying.  The WH are a little more laid back, the Goldens are very alert and a bit flightier.  Both breeds love to eat so much that they'll come over to you anyway, though.  Big ole boobs on my babies.  ;D

Did you ever get hatchlings from your WHx300? I've been looking for pictures and wondering if the babies look distinct from the WH hatchlings.

I didn't, actually... I sold that batch of ducks when we moved and didn't get more ducks until recently. My current flock is mostly adolescent WH from Holderread with an older khaki and runner I got from a neighbor. I keep meaning to get more Golden 300s someday, I really liked them.

So I love my muscovies but I'm hearing the go broody more than lay. So I'm thinking of these for eggs.
How loud are they? And will a kiddy pool do? I guess I'm a little spoiled with my well mannered muscovies :)

muscovy's are the quietest duck breed becuase they cannot quake like a mallard derived breed and their voices usually sound like someone just breathing hard or huffing.

ours go broody and lay while being broody we get at least 2 dozen eggs from a female when broody and then she just does it again.

the breed is very well mannered but if you have a problem with boys dont let that scare you it goes away as they mature they will stop seeing you as something to mate with. as long as u dont run from boys when they are trying to 'love' you and u just pick them up and hold them for a minute they usually will stop trying to get u in about a month or 2
