Looking through the replies, I guess it's not all that uncommon. However it sure surprised me! I have 10 pullets 10-15 weeks old, 2 just started laying. #1 in the pecking order caught a baby mouse not 3 feet from me inside the coop. You would have thought I'd thrown a lamb into a pride of hungry lions to see the commotion that ensued for the next 15 minutes. In seconds, she beat that mouse senseless with head shakes to the ground, and then started the game of Keep-Away from all the other girls (and me). Amazing to watch! The rest of the flock wanted it real bad and she lead them a merry chase for quite a while. Everyone got in the act, even #7, who managed to steal it and hold it the longest before it was stolen again by #2. She was evidently able to swallow it after leading the chase for a few more minutes. I had no idea they could get something that large down their skinny throats/necks. I've only had my flock a month now, so I logged on to see if this was normal. I knew they ate bugs and can even be canabalistic at times, but I had no idea they were such good hunters, and evidently considered mice a delicacy. My dogs, a mutt mouser and a rat terrier were outside the coop going nuts the whole time. Neither of them have managed to catch, let alone dispatch a mouse yet. Maybe they learned from watching.
