So, You Think Winter in the U.S. Will Be Frigid or Warm?

Farmer's Almanac says for early winter of 09---colder than normal temps and very dry weather are forecast, bringing drought conditions this winter, especially east of the Mississippi. Rains earlier in the year will be beneficial to most crops, but we predict a dry fall and winter, and its resulting low soil moisture could spell trouble for next year's crops.

Can't we just have a real winter for once??? One where it stays cold....the WHOLE winter. I lost two trees when we had 80 in February followed by a freezing March.

If this summer is any indicator, I agree with Debi's prediction....unfortunately.

Last summer it was weeks between showers, and I about ran the well dry keeping plants alive. This year, a few days between showers at most, and I have watered only a few times. Afternoon highs near 100 drop quickly with a shower. The pond that was dry last summer is full. Dog days are here, but barely noticeable; most years they are awful, with terrible bugs and air that feels too thick to breathe.

I think this trend will continue and this winter will also be mild, though I have no sign from plants or animals to support this. Trouble is, I moved a few miles into the country about 3 years ago, so I'm not watching the plants that I had watched for 30 years. They do expect a mild hurricane season this year. We get heavy rain here, if we are in the path of their travel after they go on land.

I don't know what to think... I'm leaning towards warm with maybe some snow here and there, but last winter we didn't even have snow on the ground for Christmas

The apricots didn't fruit this year, I suspect not enough chill hours, the year before the tree was loaded and we had fruit wine. This year I'll go with cold and dry here. It's not been over 101 for the last 2 weeks, and Aug is normally the 110+ days, so we've cooled off early.

It is always cold here in the winter.....so I say it will be cold.
Up here, it is always possible for a killing frost in September and is not unheard of in August.

It was pretty cold last winter...to me...but any cold is cold to me... I am hoping for a normal winter..not too warm but not too cold.

One thing I did notice is my Tulips didn't do as well this year. None of my Queen of the Night black ones came up.

I am going to order a fresh box from Holland and plant more just in case.

In my area, when there is a drought, the oaks will load up on acorns and drop masses of them (be careful going out the door without looking down first, or you'll roll away!)

This year we had mega rain, no acorns that I can see, only little premature ones that dried up and fell from the trees.

I think we have an El Nino - which usually means milder climate this year. Of course, hindsight will tell us for sure.....
