For higher end quality breeding stock AQUABID. However for "pretty" quality stock (it may take a generation or several to get constant traits in fry) Petsmart is getting better quality stock in, I saw a double tailed placket with dragon scaling the other day. My spouse is a manager at a Petsmart. So I know for a fact how often the water is changed and how they are cared for there. The less stress over the bettas lifetime the longer they will live.
The shorter fin type, the placket does not get nipped as much in a community tank, but because they are much more closely bred like the actual fighting fish sometimes they are too aggressive for a community tank.
I love aquabid, they have their own fish forum. I also love looking at lofsoffish's auctions, he has some really NICE fish. Some of his auctions for guppies go up to 400 dollars + here is a auction nobody bid on yet so hurry up and bid

Mine were always sold privately or to small specialized shops. The packaging and shipping is expensive and I hated charging ten dollars for a fish and the shipping might be double that.
